Primary News

Mr Liam Beatty

Dear Primary Parents and Guardians,

Upon their return to school yesterday, I let all the Primary boys know how proud I was of the commitment they showed to their study by embracing online learning last week. The College was certainly a quiet place without the presence of our youngest and most enthusiastic students and it was great to welcome them back yesterday, albeit with a number of restrictions.

Parents/Visitors on Site

Whilst we welcome the boys back to school this week, unfortunately, due to the current restrictions, parents and visitors are asked not to enter the College grounds. If you need to sign your son in/out of the school, please phone Primary Reception for assistance.

Student Absentees

If your child is absent from school this week, please follow the normal absentee procedure by contacting primaryabsentees@marash.qld.edu.au / 07 3858 4697. Please note that teachers will not be providing online learning for students who are absent from school due to sickness or extended travel.

Restrictions

As school operations continue under the guidelines of the new restrictions set by the Chief Health Officer, we will continue to keep you updated as more information comes to light. Your flexibility and support during this testing time are very much appreciated. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.

Online Learning Reflection

Thank you to all the families who provided feedback regarding last week’s period of online learning. As we reflect on this experience, I invite you to complete a Short parents survey here. We will also be conducting a student voice survey later this week.

Feast of St Mary Mackillop

Last Sunday the Church celebrated the Feast of St Mary Mackillop, Australia’s first and only saint. Mary is the Patron Saint of the Archdiocese of Brisbane and the founder of the Sisters of St Joseph who were a driving force in making catholic education what it is today. I know many of our staff, students and parents would have a connection to the ‘Joeys’ in some way. As we enter the week ahead, let us be guided by one of her most famous quotes ‘Never see a need without doing something about it’.

Congratulations

Finally, congratulations to Mr Bas Pelly (Year 5V) and his wife Anna on the arrival of their son, Sullivan Patrick Pelly on Saturday morning. We wish them every blessing during this exciting time.

From the Primary Learning Leader – Ms Jen Little

There is an old proverb that states, ‘It takes a village to raise a child.’ Last week’s online learning environment proved what a remarkable village we have at Marist College Ashgrove. As a whole College team, students, parents and teachers deserve to feel proud of what we were able to achieve last week in an online capacity.

As we progress through the term, I am conscious of upcoming assessments for students in Years 5 and 6. For more detail about this, I remind you of the assessment calendars that were emailed home to parents and students at the beginning of the term. I also take this opportunity to remind students and parents of the valuable resources that exist on our Library pages regarding tips for revision. There are a wealth of resources on this site to assist students with study. Fundamentally, one of the best ways students can prepare for assessments is through the skill of summarising. This assists students in developing their retention of what is learned. Benefits include the following:

  1. Helps individuals find the main points and critical details
  2. Builds metacognition skills as it forces individuals to use their own words

Below are some additional revision tips taken directly from our Library site:
