Junior Ensemble Evening
Last term concluded with the sound of music ringing through the rafters of Life Ministry Church.
The Junior Concert Band commenced the evening with an excellent performance of some challenging repertoire, including Furioso (R.W. Smith) and Surfin’ USA (arr. M. Sweeney). The members of Malaguena then joined the Concert Band to present a variety of styles of orchestral music.
The contribution of the four string ensembles highlighted the progression made by the students in the program, starting with Andante (Year 3) and moving through Cabaletta (Year 4), Ostinato (Years 5 & 6) and finally Malaguena (auditioned Years 5 & 6). Malaguena impressed with their presentation of Fire On The Mountain (K. Kyriakou). With fine performances from all the string groups, it is safe to say that strings playing at Oxley Christian College is in safe hands. Vivace is our tuned percussion ensemble and they skilfully moved their mallets to present some classical masterpieces.
The Junior Choirs are always a feature of any Ensemble Evening. The Cherub Choir delighted the audience with their singing of I’ve Lost My Homework, and the Seraphim Choir displayed strong harmonies in I Got A Robe (arr. Gilpin). The Junior Vocal Ensemble maintained a high standard in their songs, which included Pink Zebra’s Climb Higher, featuring slick choreography. The evening concluded with the Combined Choir, inspiring all those in attendance with the message of We’ll Rise Above (Lasky and Fukuda).
The Junior Ensembles presented at Music Chapel the next day to the whole Junior School. The Seraphim Choir helped to lead worship and Mr Clarke presented the message. The music was well received by all the students and the Performing Arts Captains, Leah Chen and Levi Daly capably guided it through.
Music Camp
The Senior School started this term with a Music Camp. This gave the musicians time to delve into new repertoire and to just chill out together. The unique aspect of Music Camp is that students from Years 7 – 12 have an opportunity to hang out together and learn from each other. Much was achieved and the results will be heard at this term’s Gala Concert, as well as next term’s Arts Festival and Presentation Evening.

Music Assembly
The Senior Ensembles then presented some music to their peers at the Music Assembly. There were some great choices so that the music was accessible to a wider audience. The Senior Concert Band opened with Danger Zone (from Top Gun) (arr. M. Story) and other items included Sinfonia with Fields of Gold (arr. Moore) and a very popular performance of Aha’s Take On Me (Pentatonix arr. Emerson), complete with vocal percussion. The Senior Choir closed the assembly with One Republic’s Run (arr. Narverud).
Musicals
There will be more on the Middle Years Production Aladdin JR in the next edition of The Vine. Needless to say, that much work has gone into this production, the students are having a blast and are presently in the middle of their season. If you haven’t seen it yet, there may be a ticket to the last two performances on Saturday. The Junior School attended the dress rehearsals and loved it! Congratulations to all involved!
The Junior School are well into rehearsals for Seussical JR and details for purchasing tickets will be released soon.
Mega Chapel
Mega Chapel was certainly an event not to be missed; LMC was wall to wall with students and staff. Music played a big part in the service, with senior students leading worship, supported by an excellent band, joined by Mr Clarke and the Junior Vocal Ensemble. The Prep students certainly led their Senior School buddies to perform the actions of My Lighthouse and the voices of all nearly raised the roof in worship during Reckless Love.

Many of our music students achieved excellent results in their music examinations last semester and a full list will be included in the next edition of The Vine.
Junior School students continue to feature as Performer of the Week in Junior Chapel. This semester commenced with a skilfull cello solo from Noah Chen (6B) and an entertaining vocal solo from Jaden Sia (6B).
There are plenty of events still to come this semester, so check the list, consult your diary, and plan to be entertained by our talented students.
