Grade 2

LITERACY 

Over the past two weeks we have been focusing on Information reports in both reading and writing. Last week we looked at animals. We focused on Tigers from Monday to Thursday. During reading the students read about and summarised information on the tigers. In writing the students used the information they read during reading and wrote a full information report. On Friday the students got to choose an animal and during reading they once again read and summarised the information and then wrote their information report. This week the students have been learning all about Famous People around the world especially Edith Cowan and writing an information report about her life and why she is famous. 

NUMERACY

Last week the students were looking at finding length in maths. They looked at finding the length of objects using informal units. They used unifix blocks, letter tiles, paperclips, dominos, and counters in order to find the lengths of objects around the classroom. This week they looked at weight and mass. They learnt how to use hefting in order to find which object was heavier than the other. They then began to use balancing scales in order to work out weights of objects around the classroom.

HUMANITIES

For the past two weeks students have been gathering the weather data from four different places around Australia; Ballarat, Darwin, Gold Coast, and Sydney. They found the highest and lowest temperature of each place for five days. They then added weather symbols onto a map of Australia to create a weather chart. 

YEAR 2 WELL-BEING

This term we have begun coming together as a whole year 2 cohort on a Thursday afternoon. We have been working on getting to know each other and expanding our circle of people we know. We have done many activities which get students making connections to one another and work on how they communicate to each other. The students have loved mixing up with the other classes and getting to know people they usually wouldn’t.
