Grade 1
Reading
In our grade 1 reading journey, we're diving into the exciting worlds of summarising and text-to-self connections! Summarising helps our young readers capture the heart of a story by picking out the most important parts. We're learning to put on our "story detective" hats and find the who, what, where, and why of each adventure we read.
Text-to-self connections are like magic bridges that connect our lives to the characters in the books we read. We're discovering that the feelings, experiences, and thoughts of characters can sometimes remind us of our own. This helps us understand the stories better and lets us explore how books relate to our lives.
Writing
This fortnight in Writing, students have enjoyed completing their unit on descriptive writing where we explored sensory writing and using our 5 senses to describe places at Grayling Primary School. Students were able to visit a place in the school such as the sandpit, oval or playground and describe it using their senses.
Students have now begun their new unit on narratives, where they will be learning about different types of narratives, the structure of a narrative and writing their own stories. This will be an exciting genre for the Grade 1 students to learn about and we can’t wait to see where their imagination takes them!
Maths
Students were introduced to ‘Capacity’, exploring the definition of the term throughout the week. They measured and compared capacities of pairs of objects using informal units. Students further revised language used to describe how much a container can hold such as “Full, Half-Full and Empty”. Using the newly learned terms, students were able to apply this to practical situations whilst simultaneously exploring this through ‘Challenges’ involving water.
Integrated
In Integrated, students have been learning to describe time using past, present and future. They identified examples of events from their own lives in each category.
They have also explored the features of timelines and the importance of placing events in chronological order. Students had an opportunity to create their own personal timeline to share important life events.
