Welcome

In this edition of MY FUTURE Careers News, there is much activity around transition into 2024. At the end of last term, saw the Year 10 cohort introduced to our Pathways Week Program. This program invited students to hear from and experience all the subjects on offer, to help with choosing subjects for VCE and VCE VM.

Some of our Year 10 students completed Work Experience over the first week of the school holidays. They worked in areas such as Health, Law, Childcare and Science. This experience will help students decide pathway options as they head into the transition to 2024. Below is a recap of one of our student’s experience of the week.

During the first week of the school holidays I had the opportunity to go and complete work experience at Wallaby Childcare Centre in Wollert. I really enjoyed working with the childcare teachers and getting to know what life is like as a childcare teacher and learning from them how the childcare system works. I also really enjoyed playing and reading stories to the kids all day long; it was surprisingly fun to spend time with people who are 10 years younger than me!

I believe that this experience opened my eyes to what being an early learning educator is like. It really helped me realise how much I love working with kids and caring for them, maybe not as an early learning educator, but maybe as a pediatric nurse where I can also care and engage with kids for a living. To anyone considering the idea of doing work experience, I 100% recommend it; it is a good chance to form new connections, discover new personality traits you did not know you had and open your eyes to the big world out there.

Finally, the Futures Expo was held last week in the Centenary Building. It was a great success with many students from Years 9 to 12 attending with parents/guardians to find out about our many subject offerings in VCE and VCE VM. We also had representatives of Tertiary Institutions in attendance including Melbourne, Monash, La Trobe, ACU, RMIT, Swinburne and Deakin Universities, as well as Carlton College of Sport, an organisation in the Vocational sector.

The next couple of weeks will be very busy as our Senior students undertake their subject selections for 2024.
