Year Three

Dear Year Three Families,

The Year Three teachers have been so proud of the wonderful efforts students have been showing in their classes since returning this term. The students have settled back into routines with ease, allowing for some fabulous learning to occur these past few weeks.

Guest Speaker

In connection to our Inquiry, we had the pleasure of hosting a special guest speaker, Tamay Beam, a talented professional artist, at our school on Monday 31 July. Tamay shared her expertise in showcasing Aboriginal culture through the expressive form of painted art. All our Year Three students had a fantastic opportunity to participate in a cultural painting session, where they were guided and instructed by Tamay. It was an enriching experience that allowed our students to connect with the rich heritage and artistry of Aboriginal culture. We are grateful to Tamay for sharing her knowledge and passion with our school community.

Reading

In Reading, over the last few weeks our cohort has continued to explore author's craft in reading, by analysing the craft and writing styles of Anthony Brown, Mem Fox and Margret Wild. Students were exposed to a variety of author's crafts such as, onomatopoeias, alliterations, similes, repetition, hyperboles, graphic imagery, vocabulary, dialogue ect. In the coming weeks, we will begin to transition our students through the Reciprocal Reading process (Predictor, Questioner, Summariser and Clarifier) to further enhance their reading abilities.

Writing

In Writing, our Year Three students have continued to immerse themselves in 'author's craft'. This has assisted students to further reflect on their own writing styles by exposing students to different author's crafts, which they can use in their writing. Students have explicitly unpacked and looked at hyperboles, similes, alliterations,  dialogue, and vocabulary, to name a few.  Alongside this, students are now working on building their agency by selecting and practising their individual writing goals, which are then broken down and reflected upon with their classroom teacher. As of next week, we will be introducing Procedural Writing to further enhance the writing styles of our students through interactive and engaging writing experiences.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students in Year Three have been exploring Location. Our students have looked into the Tier Three vocabulary of directional language and how it can be used to more efficiently to provide someone with informative directions when identifying objects on maps and around the school. We looked at a compass rose, supporting students to use the language, north, north-east, east, south, south-east, east-west, west, north-west. This week we have introduced 'money' to the students. During this concept, students will engage in calculating collections of money using dollars and cents. They will be using their knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to efficiently solve open-ended problems related to the real world regarding finance.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students have now completed their third unit, 'Effective healthcare systems prioritise community welfare and wellness'.  To conclude the unit, students had the opportunity to showcase their understanding by designing a poster, displaying the key links between the key concepts and related concepts in connection to their Central Idea.

The Year Three students have now commenced their fourth Unit of Inquiry, through the Transdisciplinary Theme, 'How we Express Ourselves' under the Central Idea, 'Many cultures express themselves through different art mediums, encouraging interconnectedness in our global community'. The students have begun to unpack our new key concepts to introduce them into our unit ahead. In the coming weeks, students will explore their own culture and how their culture expresses themselves through the medium of art.
