Welcome to Week 4 of Term 3!

This term is flying by so fast and is full of some really exciting experiences. Be sure to check the weekly reminders which contain all the important dates and exciting events for this term.

100 Days of School

Last Friday our Preps celebrated 100 days of school. Our students went to so much effort as they all came dressed up in the theme of 100, with plenty of 100 year old people,  Disney Characters or costumes that represented the number 100. The Preps all looked so amazing and were proud of their costumes and the thought that had gone into them.

Leading up to our awesome celebration, the students participated in getting their classroom ready by making a poster and designing their very own crowns to celebrate that they are now 100 days smarter! We ended our amazing day with a fun disco outside where all the classes got together to have a little boogie (dance)! We are all so proud of the efforts our Preps have put in to their learning so far and we cannot wait to see how far they will go!

Reading

In Reading, the preps have continued exploring different text types (fiction and non-fiction texts) and identifying the important features of these text types. The students are continuously striving to use the Good Reader strategies to help them decode unfamiliar words and ensuring they try to integrate more than one strategy when attempting an unknown word. This week we will be introducing a new text type called Information Reports and Students will have the opportunity to read books that will inform them about topics they are interested in

Writing

In writing, students have continued exploring the five W’s (who, what, when, where & why) in lessons to write about an event that is special to them. Students continue to have a go at writing sentences correctly, starting with a capital letter, maintaining finger spaces between words, and using different punctuation such as a question mark, full stops, and exclamation marks - to finish of their sentences. Students are encouraged to write sentences that contain High Frequency Words that they are learning so they are able to gain a better understanding of what that word means, and to inform their readers.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we have continued exploring the concept of addition within Number and Algebra. It has been wonderful to see students recognise the plus (+) sign and the equal (=) sign, and confidently using a range of strategies when solving addition problems. We have loved hearing the students using different mathematical vocabulary to describe their thinking in solving these addition problems, for example, a student stated, "We used part part whole to solve that 3 and 4 makes 7. This means that 3 plus for equals 7. Part-part whole is when we have two parts and we put them together to make a bigger number."

Reminders

We have a few reminders this week:

  1. We have our excursion to the Werribee Open Range Zoo on the 22nd and 23rd of August. We would like all children to attend, so please make sure you have paid for this by Monday the 14 August. Payments will NOT be accepted after this date. If you have any difficulties with this payment, please let your child's teacher know as soon as possible.
  2. In weeks 9 and 10 our Preps will be participating in an 8 day intensive swimming program. If you wish for your child to attend this program, please ensure that payment is completed by Monday the 14 August. Payments will NOT be accepted after this date. If you have any difficulties with this payment, please let your child's teacher know as soon as possible.
  3. Waste free Wednesday - At Saltwater p-9 College we are striving to be a litter free school. An initiative that we are doing to achieve this is having a waste free Wednesday lunch. This means that in your child's lunch box please do not include wrappers or papers that can be thrown away, instead use reusable containers where possible.
  4. Satchels and iPads, Please ensure that these come to school everyday with your child. iPads need to be charged and ready to be used in class.

Thank you, from the Prep teaching team.
