Instrumental Music

Nik Salter

Instrumental Music is an extracurricular program at Heathmont College.  Students have an opportunity to learn a wide variety of instruments including: drum kit, orchestral percussion, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, classical and contemporary voice, guitar, bass, ukulele, violin, cello and piano. Small group classes are held weekly on a rotating timetable that operates throughout each day, and students are grouped according to their ability and experience.

Students further practice their skills, and have an opportunity to learn from each other, in the complementary ensemble program, where they choose from Junk Percussion, College Band, Choir, Keys Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Indy Pop, Yr 9 Band & Senior Rock Band. Rehearsals run on a weekly basis, either at recess Mondays or lunchtimes the rest of the week.

Instrumental Music students are currently working towards the Annual Music Concert.

This year’s event is to be held on Tuesday 24 August on campus and is open for everyone to attend, so pop it in your calendar now!  The evening starts at 7pm and it is a showcase of student works.  There will be some featured solos, as well as small group and larger ensemble performances.  Look out for more information here and the Compass News Feed in the coming weeks.

The Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB) Instrumental Music exams are open for enrolment now.  Some students have expressed interest in participating in these external exams that offer students an assessment of their skills, and are a terrific way to celebrate student achievements while obtaining an internationally recognised certification.  If your student is interested in sitting an exam in their instrument, from Preliminary level onwards, and you have not received a course confirmation notification, please contact Nik Salter, Instrumental Music Coordinator on 9871 4888 or via email at nik.salter@education.vic.gov.au asap. Enrolment fees must be paid for through the College by July 23 to sit exams in the final sessions for 2021, in October – November.

Semester Two is a great opportunity for students to join the Instrumental Music Program, now that a regular school routine has been established.  If your student is interested in learning an instrument, please contact Nik Salter by phone or email for more details. Beginners and experienced players are all welcome.  Also, if your student learns an instrument outside of school and just wants to play in a band, enquiries are most welcome.
