VET Taster & Information Session

Anne Gough

It was very fortunate that this highly informative morning could work within the Covid restrictions to enable interested Year 9 students to gain an insight into two VET courses of their choice. In the forty-minute session the structure of training packages and assessment by competency was explained. In addition to this it was outlined that VET courses engender differences to those of school subjects through industry focus, OH&S and the increased combination of the practical and theory aspects.

Students then had some hands-on tasks in the workshops. In the area of Building, students did some work bench tasks with hand tools to learn correct technique. Automotive students looked at the equipment and the cars used to work on. Hair & Beauty participants applied make-up on print outs of faces. In Kitchen operations students were informed about cooking techniques, methods and food presentations to then create pizza and a fancy dessert. Similarly, imagination and creativity came to the fore in Screen & Media where students worked in a 3D program to create a snowman.

Monivae is most appreciative that HDSC has given students such a worthwhile insightful experience. Students now need to reflect on these experiences in order to assist with meaningful subject selection and a consideration of the many varied career pathways that these certificates could lead to.
