Senior Badminton Success

by Eleazar Leong and Rohan Kannan

On Friday 4 May, twenty-two Year Eleven and Twelve students, along with Miss Xu and Mr Cook, attended the annual Senior Monash Divisional Badminton round robin held at Monash Sport. All the players performed well both winning and losing valiantly without giving up.

The Senior Girls A team performed well winning against all their opponents, unfortunately losing to Wellington Secondary College in the final round. They fought down to the last wire losing 5-1, with a nail-biting final doubles where every point was fought for.

The Senior Boys A Team won comfortably through the day, winning almost every match they played. Ultimately they were hailed as the Divisional champions and will move onto the Eastern Metropolitan Region Finals which will be held on the 20th of July. Both the Senior Boys and Senior Girls B teams performed well, putting up a solid fight against the other teams and both teams ended up at the top of their pools.

The standout player of the day goes to Enoch Tai, who was a magician on court, shattering his opponents’ morale with his explosive battle cry of “Come on!” on numerous occasions. All in all, it was a solid day out for all students, and although some were disappointed they couldn’t make it to the next round, they showed the true John Monash spirit.

Special thanks to Mr Cook and Miss Xu for putting up with us, and to all the players for a very competitive day for everyone.

Battle Of The Ages: Staff vs. Students Sports

Since the final weeks of Term 1, a fierce competition has periodically electrified the outdoor courts of John Monash Science School.

Organised by the Student Sports and Recreation team, members of the JMSS community have been encouraged to be active and represent their respective teams in a series of staff versus students sporting events.

To date, sporting superstars from both sides have done battle across the landscapes of cricket, basketball and soccer, with volleyball and mixed netball scheduled across the remainder of the year. Despite valiant efforts from the students, including an incredibly close game of soccer, the staff have taken a 2-0 lead in the series, with the victor of Term 1's cricket match still the matter of some dispute due to rain ending play.

Thank you and well done to Rushi Patel for his role in organising these events - and best of luck to the students in the games that remain!

Aquatic advancement nets accolades for JMSS students at iAwards

Three senior students from JMSS have been recognised for their contributions to genetic research being undertaken at the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI) on Monash University’s Clayton Campus, claiming top honours in the Victorian round of the Australian Information Industry Association’s national innovation awards.

Working with researchers at ARMI, Preneel Chugh, Aashutosh Sapkota and Angad Singh developed a specialized Movement Impeding Device (MID) to improve methodological processes involving zebrafish embryos in research laboratories.

The students were commended for the innovative and cost-effective nature of the device, and will progress to the national round of the awards in August. Well done!
