Dear Parents and Students,

As we head towards the end of semester one, faculties are finalising their assessments and the exam period is nearly upon us. The dates for exams are different for each year level and do begin next week.

The exam timetable has been published for students. This is a complex document and needs to be read very carefully. Students do need to share this timetable with parents so that the dates and times of all exams are known. Students must check for clashes and note these on the google doc that has been shared with them. If a student cannot attend a Year 10 or 11n exam due to illness they must obtain a medical certificate to cover their absence.

JMSS follows all VCAA rules in terms of exam protocols. This means that phones and smart watches cannot be brought into the exam venue. Pencil cases and water bottles must be transparent.

Students must plan to be at school at least 45 minutes early for their scheduled JMSS exams. With issues around the reliability of public transport and considerable traffic congestion, these are good habits to get into.

Over the next 3 weeks trains have been replaced by buses between Caulfield and Westall. This will cause significant disruption and needs to be factored into planning.

The GAT

On Wednesday 13 June, 2018 all students completing a year 12 subject (442 students) will be sitting the GAT (the biggest ever!).

Due to the size of the group and multiple exam venues we are asking students to be at school by 9am at the latest. Students have been told that if they are going to be late, they must ring the general office on (03) 9905 1002.

Opportunities for students

The end of term 2 and early term 3 sees a number of exciting events involving JMSS students. The last 2 weeks of term sees:

  • Mr Corkill and Ms Adolph accompany 4 students to present their scientific research at the International Students Science Fair in Chicago USA
  • 72 year 11 students and 8 staff are spending 12 days on the fifth JMSS reef and rainforest trip to Far North Queensland
  • Mr Mann and Ms Gallus accompany 3 students to the Water is Life bi annual conference in Tokyo Japan.

Very soon students will be able to apply for the following events. They will also be advertised on Compass.

  • SC18 or the Supercomputing 2018 conference in Dallas, Texas in November this year. This trip will take 4 current year 10 students and is run in conjunction with Monash University IT faculty.
  • Antarctica Flight in February 2019. This trip is open to 10 students from either Year 10 or 11 at discounted rates.
  • Ritsumeikan Science High School Science Fair in November, held in Kyoto, Japan.
