Dear Parents and Students,

It’s been a very busy time at JMSS with some wonderful achievements of late, and some very important weeks ahead.

In this edition I add to my series on good study habits with discussion about the ‘before, during and after’ of exams, and would hope all our students take time to read it carefully.

Science Exhibition Night

The Year 10 Science Exhibition Night held recently was a great success. Each year I marvel at the high quality of work and the passion and clarity with which the students communicate their newly acquired scientific knowledge. All of our many visitors had a terrific and informative night, and all are to be sincerely congratulated on a wonderful exhibition.

There were many prospective parents and students there on the night, fresh from the annual Information Night not long prior. They could not have left with a better impression of the school and its work.

Talking about that event, we actually filled Blackwood hall for the first time in our history – some 1500 attendees on the night. My sincere thanks to Mal Anderson who organised the large team of students and staff in attendance, and to Liam Hensel and Amanda Stephens who marketed the evening so effectively.

Regional Science Exchange: Farewell to first cohort of students for 2018

Again, my sincere thanks to all of our host parents and families after the most recent cohort of Regional Science Exchange concluded.

It is only through your generosity that this opportunity is made available to these students, and our feedback suggested overwhelmingly they relished the experience and learnt much about JMSS and the opportunities in science which await them at the end of their secondary studies.

All of the visiting students left us with very positive thoughts and feelings about the school, and we look forward to welcoming them back to JMSS in October for our annual Science Fair.

International Mathematical Modelling Challenge

My congratulations to Year 12 students Boris Deletic, Vlad Mikho, Joshua Nibbs and Nicholas Warren who won an honourable mention in the recent International Mathematical Modelling Challenge. This is simply an outstanding

achievement and one the boys should be rightly proud of.

Success for JMSS Students in the 2018 iAwards

Sincere congratulations also go to Year 12 student Praneel Chugh and Year 11 student Angad Singh for their outstanding achievement in winning the Victorian sector of the prestigious AIIA (Australian Information Industry Association) awards for their ground-breaking research in creating a Biomedical Movement Impeding Device which

could well be used by universities and doctors in medical research and practice.

This is a mighty effort supported by JMSS staff and Monash University researchers, and one these lads should be rightly proud of.

Monash Engineering Scholarships

Finally congratulations to 2017 Year 12 students Caitlin Lim, John Kim, Joshua Galland and Andy Mak who recently won prestigious Monash Engineering Scholarships, for the duration of their undergraduate studies.

These awards are very generous and are presented to high achieving students from Year 12 who begin their university studies with this

faculty.
