Teaching and Learning

Japanese

こんにちは!Hello!

Did you know that Midori no Hi (Green Day) is celebrated in Japan on May 4? It is a day for appreciating nature.

Sachiko Sensei talked to the middle primary classes about how her family celebrates this day in Japan. We then worked with her to plant some seeds of our own. We had great success and the students have taken their 'Sugar Snap Peas' home to share.

Our Year 1 students have been busy learning the same as Grade 1 Kanji that students in Japan learn. As Kanji characters are originally derived from pictures, they are fun and easy to learn. Sachiko Sensei worked with the students to write their favourite Kanji in Shodo (Calligraphy) writing. It was lots of fun!

Science News

In Science, we had an incursion from the Nature Education Centre. They brought in some amazing animals and talked to the students about what they have to consider when building their enclosures to keep them in captivity. The students got to pat and hold two lizards,  a snake, mice, a betong, a hermit crab and a green tree frog. They loved learning about the animals and getting to handle them.

Sports News

Last Tuesday three teams from West Beach Primary traveled to Henley Primary to compete in the NRL Tackle Rugby Championships. All three teams competed strongly all day and made some bone crunching plays. The weather tried to put a damper on the day but to the students credit they played through some rough conditions and did it all with a smile on their faces. Mr Bachnish and I were extremely pleased with how the students represented West Beach Primary on the day. Congratulations to Kiana Gettings, Brayden, McKenzie and Mike Williams who won the Sportsmanship award.

Over the past couple of weeks former AFL player, Brian Leys, has been running FUN FOOTY clinics with our junior primary students. Students worked on their coordination, kicking, marking, handballing and decision making all while having fun with footy. Fun Footy currently runs on Mondays with 8 and 9 year olds and Wednesdays 10-12yo at Henley FC. The sessions also run Fridays with 5-7yo at Henley Primary School. Brian would love for some West Beach students to join these sessions.

Room 8 News

In Room 8 we have been developing our writing skills, particularly focusing on ways to engage our audience. With the help of Mrs Wright (EALD teacher) and Mrs Davey, we have been focusing on using the senses to create more imaginative and descriptive pieces of work.

Here are some samples of amazing writing…

I walked up the path to the house. As I walked around the mansion, I saw spooky cats, howling wolves and a long, crooked path leading to the front door. I creeped closer and closer, and then I heard a blood-curdling scream. As quickly as I could, I hid in the dark shadows. I was as scared as a petrified teddy bear. Quietly I peeked in the window. There was a spooky ghost, who quickly disappeared under the dark bed. Jethro

I walked up the path towards the house, there was howling and screeching. I was PETRIFIED. I couldn’t even move my toes…. It was so scary. Asha

I walked up the path towards the house. Slowly I got closer and closer. I heard bats squeaking, and screaming humans in the distance. Suddenly, there was a howling wolf. AAAAAAAAAARGH! A zombie with scratches all over his body. The door slammed and a skeleton fell to the ground. We ran back to the car. Hudson

One spooky night my car broke down at a scary haunted mansion. As I stepped out of my car, I came across a little black cat. I could see burnt bushes ahead as I walked along the cracked path. In the distance I could smell a potion being made by a witch. The crows were talking in the trees and I felt scared. There were butterflies in my stomach. The wind was howling and I could hear footsteps. I did not feel safe. I wanted to call the police, but there was no service. Anna

One spooky night I walked along the broken path towards the mansion. There were bats and cats and even a big huge moon. I could hear the crows talking and the bats flapping their wings. There was a lady up ahead who said she saw a dead man with lots of blood. “HEEEEEEEEEELP!” I cried. I followed the lady into the haunted house, and she was actually a monster. I ran away. Everything smelt like death. I was scared and worried because they were my family. Suddenly I saw something in the window. A person or a stranger……… Tikhon
