Senior School Careers Morning Tea

Many thanks to Carolyn Creswell of Carman’s Foods, who gave an inspiring speech to our senior students about her successful career path on Tuesday 28th May.  She shared lots of career advice, and on a personal level, told students to keep your desk tidy, rest and go to bed early, network with employers you want to get to know, and that anyone can juggle the work/life balance! She also provided each student with a nut free oat slice bar from her Carman’s Food range.

I also wish to acknowledge Mr. Jamie Evans of McDonald’s Clayton/Chadstone, who sponsored our event with delicious morning tea from the McCafe menu.

Senior School Careers and Employment Expo

We were very fortunate to have 20 exhibitors participate in our Senior School Careers and Employment Expo, that followed our morning tea on Tuesday 28th May. Students had the opportunity to chat to representatives and collect the latest course guides from tertiary institutions including Monash, RMIT, Swinburne, Deakin, Deakin College, La Trobe and Victoria University, as well as from Holmesglen, Box Hill and Chisholm TAFE, and private institutions including MIT, Moorabbin Flying School, Collarts, Crimson Education and the Photography Studies College.

Employers also in attendance included the Commonwealth Bank, Woolworths Ltd, ECHO Recruitment, and Victoria Police. I thank all the exhibitors for their attendance, and for providing our students with support, advice and information in their careers research.

Aspire – Early Admissions Program to La Trobe

The Aspire Program rewards the skills and knowledge students gain from the positive impact they have made on their School or Community, through community service or volunteerism. Designed to give Year 12s the tools they need to succeed at La Trobe and beyond, students accepted into the Aspire program will get:

  • A taste of university life at La Trobe with special on-campus events before the year commences
  • The chance to meet and connect with like-minded students
  • VCE revision lectures in the September school holidays

  • Induction into our Enrichment Program to prepare for what’s to come

Successful applicants also receive their early conditional offer in September for their chosen course, along with minimum ATAR requirements.  Many courses have a minimum ATAR of 50, but some professional degree programs have higher requirements. The Minimum ATAR Table shows the minimum ATAR for some professional degree courses, for entry through Aspire in 2020. Should an applicant’s preferred course not be listed on this table, then the minimum ATAR is 50.

Applicants are required to provide information about the length and frequency of their community service and/or volunteering experience, as well as a 400-word description of your involvement and impact. Further details can be found at the How to Apply link. Applications open 1st June 2019.

Christ is Risen!

We had the blessing on the 24th May where our students of Senior and Middle School attended a joyful Paschal service of the Divine Liturgy. Our students from the Byzantine Choir chanted vividly for our students and staff. The theme of our discussion was about the Epistle Reading of Paul to the Colossians (3 -12:16), finding peace in our hearts in Christ. In order for us to have peace in our hearts we must be  Christ-like, to try and be compassionate, kind, humble, to have patience with one another, forbearing one another, and if one has a complaint against another, forgive each other; as the Lord has forgiven all of us, so we also must forgive.

Our Junior School will be attending on the 5th June at 9.00 am, at the Leave-Taking Divine Liturgy Service of Pascha, in other words the celebration of 40 Days of Easter. Everyone is welcome to come to this service. This service will be celebrated exactly how it was celebrated at Easter Midnight Service. We will be hearing the beautiful chanting of our students singing Christ is Risen!

The Feast Holy Ascension

The Lord Jesus passed 40 days on Earth after His Resurrection from the dead, appearing continually in various places to His disciples, with whom He also spoke, ate, and drank, thereby further demonstrating His Resurrection. On this Thursday, the 40th day after Pascha, He appeared again in Jerusalem. After He had first spoken to the disciples about many things, He gave them His last commandment, that is, that they go forth and proclaim His Name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. But He also commanded them that for the present, they were not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait there together until they receive power from on high, when the Holy Spirit would come upon them.

Saying these things, He led them to the Mount of Olives, and raising His hands, He blessed them; and saying again the words of the Father's blessing, He was parted from them and taken up. Immediately a cloud of light, a proof of His majesty, received Him. Sitting thereon as though on a royal chariot, He was taken up into Heaven, and after a short time was concealed from the sight of the disciples, who remained where they were with their eyes fixed on Him. At this point, two Angels in the form of men in white raiment appeared to them and said, "Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into Heaven? This same Jesus, who is taken up from you into Heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into Heaven" (Acts 1:11).

These words, in a complete and concise manner, declare what is taught in the Symbol of Faith concerning the Son and Word of God. Therefore, having so fulfilled all His dispensation for us, our Lord Jesus Christ ascended in glory into Heaven, and sat at the right hand of God the Father. As for His sacred disciples, they returned from the Mount of Olives to Jerusalem, rejoicing because Christ had promised to send them the Holy Spirit.

A fundraising event is an event or campaign whose primary purpose it is to raise money for a cause, charity or non-profit organization.  Organising a fundraiser is also important in order to promote the message and goals of a charity. Over the last three weeks, Oakleigh Grammar students have organised two major fundraisers!

On Sunday 12th of May, students and staff took part in the annual Mother’s Day Classic, by completing a 4km walk in the city. The Mother’s Day Classic is Australia’s largest breast cancer fundraiser. Prior to this event, Year 11 students organised a sausage sizzle for our Middle and Senior School. The main goal of these two events was to raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s research to improve the detection, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Congratulations to Year 11 students for their initiative in raising funds for such a worthwhile cause!

On Thursday 23rd May, our students organised our annual “Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea” fundraiser. The purpose of this fundraiser is to raise money for the Cancel Council. SRC members together with our Middle School leaders prepared delicious strawberry and chocolate milkshakes for our ELC and Junior School students. Our young students were happy getting their milkshakes, and they really enjoyed them. Staff members from all across the School also participated in this fundraiser by having a nice morning tea during recess. Well done to all students who helped and supported this fundraiser!

May is a very significant month for the Greek Community in the diaspora. A number of events are organised annually to commemorate the Pontian Greek Genocide and the Battle of Crete.

On Sunday 19th May, the Coordinating Committee of Pontian Associations in Melbourne, organised a memorial service for the Commemoration of the Pontian Greek Genocide. This year marks 100 years since the Pontian Genocide, one of the most significant events in Greece’s history. Selected SRC members and Middle School leaders attended the Doxology at St. Eustathios church in South Melbourne, showing their respect to those who lost their lives during the period 1916-1923.

Oakleigh Grammar students attended two main events organised by the Battle of Crete and the Greece Commemorative Council for the 78th Anniversary of the Battle of Crete.

On Tuesday 14th May, the Greek classes of Year 9 and Year 10/11 watched the British movie, “I’ll Met By Moonlight” at the Palace Westgarth Cinemas in Northcote. The movie was based on the true story of how, during World War II, British kidnapped German General Kraipe from under the nose of his army.

This year, the Commemoration of the 78th Anniversary of the Battle of Crete took place on Sunday 26th May, and our School was invited to attend. Senior and Middle School leaders, SRC representatives, and Unit 1 LOTE Modern Greek students represented our School at the Doxology at St Eustathios church in South Melbourne. After the service, a parade of community schools, organisations and veteran units took place at the Shrine of Remembrance. Also, a wreath laying ceremony was conducted, where Efthymia Delichristou and Arthur Milaras lay a wreath on behalf of Oakleigh Grammar. Congratulations to all students who gave up at their own time and represented our School with pride.

On Monday 27th May, we had an official visit from the Hellenic Armed Forces. Lieutenant General Ioannis Paxivanakis from the Hellenic Navy, and Lieutenant Colonel Christos Anastasiadis from the Hellenic Airforce, visited Oakleigh Grammar. Our Prinicpal, Mr Mark Robertson, together with Father George Adamakis, Mr George Giannaros, Vice President of the Board, and Mr Sam Varsos, Treasure of the Board of Governance, welcomed the visitors to our School at 9:30 am. After conducting a tour around the School ground, they all had a morning tea together, exchanging some significant presents and discussing the future of our younger generations.

On behalf of Oakleigh Grammar, we would like to congratulate the Battle of Crete and Greece Commemoration Council, and especially Chairman Mr Tsourdalakis for the outstanding organisation of this year’s event.
