Grade 2
Harmony Day
On Friday 24th of March we celebrated Harmony Day. Harmony Day is a special occasion where we celebrate the diverse social, cultural, religious and linguistic backgrounds that make up our school community. We all dressed up in either our cultural clothing or the colour orange. We spent the day listening to and respecting each other. We did some collaborative colouring and read some multicultural stories. We even got to walk in a parade that showcased our Learning Community’s diversity in front of the entire school.
Reading
During our Reading sessions we have been learning about different comprehension strategies to help us understand what the text is about. So far, we have looked at sequencing, visualising, questioning and inferring. We will continue to look at these strategies for the rest of the term.
Remind to parents: Students are able to take a book home from their levelled library. Please encourage them to read at home as much as possible. If your child has forgotten their book, they can read on Wuska or pick a book to read from home.
Writing
Over the last few weeks, we have looked at procedural writing and learnt how to write one. We wrote some instructions that told the reader how to make a paper plane that could fly the farthest. After that we made a recipe for a magic potion. If anyone was to drink this potion they would turn into the perfect teacher. In our final week of procedural texts we will make sticky slime.
Mathematics
Our topic for mathematics this week is 2D shapes. We have been looking at all different types of shapes and learning to identify them based on the number of sides and corners they have. We all went on a hunt looking for these shapes inside and outside the Learning Community. It is important we link our classroom learning to our everyday life. Next week’s topic is 3D objects.
Humanities Artefacts
Over the last few weeks, we have had the opportunity to bring an item to school that was special to our families. We all had the chance to talk about our item in front of our classmates. There were a variety of items including:
- Rings & jewellery
- Handmade crafts
- Old family photos
- Ornaments & decorations.
