Fire Carriers

On Tuesday 28th February our new FIRE Carriers for 2023 were commissioned in a special ceremony.  FIRE stands for Friends Igniting Reconciliation through Education and our FIRE Carriers are responsible for leading our school in promoting Reconciliation with Indigenous Australians and their history.  Those who were commissioned this week included our Year 5 students and nine staff members.

It was an honour to be one of the nine staff members commissioned alongside the Year 5 students on Tuesday and as a new staff member to the school, it was really great to feel part of this caring community working towards such an important goal.

The ceremony began with an Acknowledgement of Country, followed by an explanation of the meaning behind the term "FIRE Carriers" and what a commissioning ceremony is all about.  The school's FIRE Carrier sculpture was then brought out and placed near the fire pit and artworks were handed down from our last year's FIRE Carrier team to our 2023 team.

As the 2022 FIRE Carriers shared some readings, the fire was lit.  This was followed by the commissioning of new FIRE Carriers.  For each of us new FIRE Carriers, a 2022 FIRE Carrier warmed their hands around the flame and placed them near our faces and presented us with a badge.

The ceremony ended with a reading of the commitment, a special blessing read by the 2022 FIRE Carriers and a song.  Well done and thank you to Barbara Cumming and all others involved in organising such a special ceremony.  And well done to our 2022 FIRE Carriers for the commitment you demonstrated in your role last year, raising over $700 for the Opening the Doors Foundation, amongst many other things.
