Neurodiversity Celebration Week

This week is Neurodiversity Celebration Week. This is a worldwide initiative that aims to transform how neurodivergent individuals are perceived and supported.  What does neurodiversity mean though?  It simply means that there are many differences in the way people’s brains work. This term was developed in the 1990s to fight stigma and promote acceptance of people with Autism.  Despite this, it is not limited to people who have Autism and includes people who have ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia and others.  Since the term was coined, some people choose to identify themselves as neurodivergent, without necessarily having a formal diagnosis.  They just identify that they view the world differently to others.  In essence, neurodiversity acknowledges that no two brains are the same.  Wouldn’t the world be boring if that was the case?

This week, prioritise having a chat with your children about what it means for everyone’s brain to work differently and celebrate the strength that everyone brings to the world.

Harmony Week

Next week is Harmony Week. A week dedicated to celebrating the diversity of all Australians (see the Culture and Wellbeing Page for more information). Tuesday is Harmony Day.  Students and staff will honour this day by wearing a ‘splash of orange’. This can be an item added to the uniform or involve students wearing orange clothes.
