Class Celebrations

Celebrating the growth in our wonderful children on each learning level...

Prep

Prep has been a hive of activity this term. We have dived straight into a range of new units on sustainability, including exploring how we can care for earth. The students have discovered the life of rubbish after it goes into the bin and even learnt how to recycle all different types of rubbish.

We couldn't pass up the opportunity to share some of the wonderful moments so far this term. Keep up the super learning Preps!

Year 1

In Year 1, we've been exploring the art of story retelling through Story Champs! During our Story Champs sessions, our students listen to a tale, bringing it to life with expressive gestures that reflect their understanding of the story's elements. Then they team up with their learning partners to recount the story. As they take turns retelling, students attentively listen to each other's narratives and use the Champ Checker, to ensure the accuracy of the story retelling, all while incorporating those expressive gestures.

Year 2

In Year 2, students were enthralled by the creativity and enthusiasm of Bernard Caleo's author in-visit. The goal was to create a fun comic book with detailed pictures. Bernard first demonstrated the process for drawing a self-portrait. Students used their hands to feel the features of their face and did their best to replicate this in their drawing. Once they had mastered this, Bernard took the time to break the drawings into manageable steps for their comic books. There were two comic books created: one included running away from a dinosaur and the other from a wolf! While the drawing was occurring, Bernard was full of animation showing the students how their character would look if they were running in real life and when encouraging the students' creativity.

Some fun quotes from the session:

  • "Feeling of air in the hair!"
  • "Stick people still need a neck!"
  • "Facial speech"
  • "OH GRAPES!"
  • "Where's your legs?"

Year 3

This week, students kicked off our learning about Weather in Science by creating their own model of the Water Cycle. We used a marker, a Ziploc bag, water and blue food dye. We have hung up our models so on our classroom windows so that the sun can help us observe the four parts of the water cycle (precipitation, evaporation, condensation and transpiration) in action. We even listened to this song about the Water Cycle, which has been stuck in our heads all week! Be sure to come check out our Water Cycle models on Family Friday.

Year 4

Year 4 students have been very engaged with our new class novel “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”. This week they have enjoyed exploring the characters, including writing about who their favourite character is. Students have also found words that described the settings in the novel and wrote about how these words make them feel. The Year 4's put their acting talents on show when they practised reading a scene as characters from the book!

In Science, the Year 4 students have been learning about heat energy. Students have learned about how when something is hot, molecules move quickly. They got to take part in an experiment to demonstrate how hot molecules move faster. We saw red food colouring in warm water spread quickly, and in cold water spread slowly. Ask your child to explain why this is!

Year 5

The Year 5 students have settled back into Term 4 with ease. They returned to school with smiles on their faces and lots of stories to share from their break. This week, we had a focus on our school value of 'Character'. Miss Emily, Miss Sam and Miss Orlaith witnessed countless moments where our students displayed examples straight from our student creed for the value of Character.

Take a look at our student creed for Character:

  • I smile and look on the bright side
  • I am brave and use initiative
  • I am kind to myself and others
  • I use my manners
  • I choose to do what is right, even when no one is watching

Year 6

In Year 6, our students have embarked on an exciting literary journey with a new book titled "The Book of Chance," delving into the intricate realms of social media's positive and negative impacts. They've been captivated by the storyline, making insightful connections to real-life situations. The book has sparked meaningful discussions about the impending transition from Year 6 to Year 7. Together, we've openly shared our feelings about the changes that lie ahead, providing a support network for one another during this transitional phase. As a team, we've made a promising start to the term by prioritising punctuality and organisation, setting a solid foundation for the exciting academic adventures awaiting us.

Here are some fun photos of the long awaiting shadow puppet show for the Preps. It was a huge success as the children recounted familiar fairytales to the younger grade. Throughout this entire process, Year 6 students displayed creativity through script writing, puppet making and soundtrack selection. What most impressed us though was the camaraderie between students and teams. There was a noticeable buzz on Level 4 leading up to the event. Teams worked effectively together to make decisions, complete tasks and problem solve. They proved themselves, once again, to be brilliant role models for our younger students. Well done Year 6!
