Prep

Literacy

Students have been clapping and jumping the syllables in words. They have also been identifying the beginning sound in words and the end rhyme in words, for example, box and fox, sing and wing, /t/ tap and /m/ mouse. The Preps have been using mirrors to practice the correct mouth formation to articulate the sound /m/ and feel it in their throats because /m/ is a voiced sound. Maggie Mouse is the character for the sound /m/.

This week the Preps listened to the story Bogtrotter. They investigated what a 'bog' is, and we discussed the importance of being risk-takers like the Bogtrotter and trying new experiences. The students designed a new cave for the Bogtrotter.

Maths

In Maths, we have been using our Superhero Eyes to see a number of objects or dots without counting. The game Tenzi is a great game to support students' skills in seeing a number without counting. In addition, we have been representing a number in various ways using concrete materials such as counters, icy pole sticks and blocks to show the 'manyness', using a ten frame, dots and fingers. The Preps have also been practising their counting by playing Number Tower Bingo, Race to the Pond and, in partnerships counting small collections of objects and writing the corresponding number.

Inquiry

Each Prep student had the opportunity to share their Shaping Identity box with the class. It was also an opportunity for the students to practice listening to a speaker and speaking in front of an audience. It was terrific to hear all about each student's cultural background, family members and unique objects that shape who they are.
