Librarians

Congratulations to Remy, Macey and Amelie for receiving their badges as Librarians. They take their role very seriously and are a great help during our class Library time.

Literacy

Our writing focus over the last two weeks has been on developing  and editing 'Sizzling Starts' for narrative writing pieces. So, what is a Sizzling Start you say? A Sizzling Start is an opening to a story that captures the readers interest and makes them want to read on. Sizzling Starts may start with an action, use dialogue, make the reader curious, ask a question, use humour or add onomatopoeia.

These photos demonstrate the students going on a 'Sizzling Start Hunt!'  During our visit to the Library, the students brought their iPads to find Sizzling Starts in texts in the Library, we then returned to class to share and explain what made their selection a Sizzling Start.

Maths

This week we started exploring the attributes of 2D shapes. As a class we brainstormed all the 2D shapes we knew and what their attributes were, such as angles, sides, corners/vertices. In pairs, students were given the open ended task to sort various shapes into different categories based on their attributes. They then displayed this on a poster. Some students grouped the shapes by the number of sides or vertices that they had, some grouped them by shapes that had odd or even sides, and others grouped by their shape. We learnt a lot about 2D shapes and look forward to extending this into 3D shapes next week.

Ed. In Faith

During Education in Faith we are learning about the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  Reconciliation is about mending relationships and about forgiveness.  We studied the Gospel Story ‘Jesus Forgives Peter’, then students had the opportunity to participate in a ‘Hot Seat’. This involves students volunteering to play one of the characters from the story, in this case, Jesus, Peter and another disciple.  The students role play the character while the teacher and students pose questions to them about forgiveness and why they acted in the way they did and the choices that they made. These activities help students to understand Gospel stories and Parables and make them more relatable.
