My KODU experience

My name is Eliana and I am writing to discuss what I achieved and learnt through our Digital Technology unit for Term 1, 2023.

To create our games we used a program called KODU. KODU is a visual programming software. This app is designed to teach basic programming skills and concepts in a hands-on environment. KODU allows students to create a wide range of games and game styles, as it includes a wide range of characters and objects as well as many different programs and mechanics to use.

In my game I included games mechanics such as jumping and coin collecting. To achieve the action of jumping I wrote in this line of code: ‘when the spacebar is pressed the character will jump.’ This allowed me to be able to have the person playing the game control over when they want the character to move or more specifically jump. I also wanted to have the action of collecting coins in my game. To achieve this I wrote in my code: ‘When you bump into a coin your character will eat the coin.’  This allowed my character to pick up the coin and also have the coin disappear. These are just a few of the mechanics I added

Throughout this process of creating my game I learnt a whole lot of things about both coding and also about my work ethic and attitude towards taking on new and challenging projects. Coding taught me all about the algorithms in games and how codes all rely on each other. Algorithms are basically the process of doing something, so in my game I learnt that doing things such as collecting a certain amount of coins will then allow you to move on. I also learnt that everything has to have a link to each other otherwise the mechanic in your game is useless. Creating a game taught me about my work ethic and how no matter how hard or impossible something feels, you can’t give up. You have to keep trying and striving to do your best and that will lead to a successful project.
