 Term 1

Harmony Week

Harmony Week is the celebration that recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. On Tuesday 21st March, students and staff acknowledged and celebrated diversity at Concord School. Students were encouraged to wear orange, or come in dress that represents their culture. Orange is the colour that represents Harmony Week to show support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia.

Across the school, students and staff celebrated the day in many different ways. All classes at Lower Primary read the inspiring Tracey Turner book, ‘We Are all Different’.  Students focused on the key understandings that we all look different, we are all important, and we can all learn from each other. Students created shared artwork by painting and decorating hands for a tree of harmony, and also participated in lots of fun and creative activities in their classrooms.

It was wonderful to see so much orange splashed throughout our Upper Primary students as well as many students who wore cultural dress to celebrate Harmony Week. Each class participated in a variety of cultural activities to learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds equally belong to this nation and enrich it.

Students in Secondary 7/8 participated in Harmony Week rotations where students were able to explore a range of activities including traditional games such as Bocce, Henna drawing and story time. Students also had the opportunity to share information about their cultural dress or their culture at a whole section celebration parade.

The Secondary 9/10 section integrated many activities throughout the week to recognise and celebrate diversity. Their upcoming Beach Day excursion provides students the opportunity to come together as a community, celebrate differences, and showcase how diversity brings Australians from all different backgrounds together.

Our 11/12 students have celebrated diversity of all Australians, by creating a range of artworks, infographics, posters and postcards that represent diversity and inclusion. Students enjoyed exploring many different activities that represent the different cultures within their section.

Thank you to our fantastic Student Representative Council (SRC) reps who helped organise the day, and for being responsible in collecting donations from their class. As decided by the SRC, donations from the day will go towards the Royal Children’s Hospital - Good Friday Appeal
