Camp Waratah Bay
By Hannah, Jessie, Taka
The Grade 5 & 6 campers arrived at Waratah Beach Camp (WBC) on the 27th of March 2023. The year 5 & 6’s left the school grounds at 9:00 am. We arrived and were dropped off at camp at 12:30 pm. After eating our lunches, we completed 2 activities, then we had afternoon tea, and then finished another two activities. After the activities, we started to unpack our bags.
We had dinner at 6:00pm. For dinner we had crackling pork, roast pork, baked potatoes, peas, pumpkin and broccoli (with a side of gravy). For dessert, we had fruits with ice-cream on top. After we finished, we got our torches, and went for a walk in the dark while rain was sprinkling like crazy on us. We walked along the beach and found soldier crabs. Cool things about soldier crabs are that they are the only crabs that can walk forward as well as side-ways. For supper, we had cake with pink icing with a warm cup of coco.
For breakfast the next day, we had eggs, bacon, bread with any spread you want, cereal, and fruit. You could have either cordial or water. After breakfast, we took a hot and annoying 3 hour walk to the Chicken Rock Pools. At the rock pool, one team found a giant red seaweed crab.
After we walked back from the Chicken Rock Pool, we had lunch of hotdogs and for toppings we had cheese, onion, and coleslaw. We came back to do 2 more activities. After the two activities, we had afternoon tea. Then we finished off with one more activity. After that we went back to our cabins and relaxed until dinner.
For dinner we had lasagne, broccoli, garlic bread, carrots, and sweet corn. For dessert we had ice-cream with green jelly. We had Camp Idol after dinner, and we had amazing performances. For 3rd place was Jessie, Hana, and Mimosa who shared the win. Jessie played the xylophone and Hana and Mimosa danced. 2nd place was Meg and Sara who performed kamishibai. 1st place was shared between Noa and Ruby for an ukulele performance, and Isaac for a violin performance. And for supper, we had banana cake and coco. Some students started to pack up earlier, so they don’t have to do a lot of work tomorrow.
On the last day, we had pancakes and cereal for breakfast. For seconds, the lady (Lois) threw the pancakes at you, some people caught it, but some people didn’t, and it fell splat on the floor. We had a competition on which bunkroom was the cleanest. In the boy’s section, number 14 won. In the girls room, number 4 won. For lunch we made it ourselves. We made rolls with a variety of toppings. After we finished our lunches, we left to come back home, swapping over with the grade 3 & 4’s. We arrived back in time for the bell.
GALA DAY
HANNAH, JESSIE, TAKA
On the 17th of March 2023, Gala Day took place at different places. The sports the schools participated in were basketball, softball, kanga cricket and rounders. The schools involved were Clarinda Primary School, Huntingdale Primary School, Amsleigh Park Primary School, Oakleigh Primary School, Christ Our Holy Redeemer and Sacred Heart Primary School.
Overall, Rounders won most of their games. They received a blue winner pendant as well as a red runner’s up one. Taka described the games as “A bit challenging, but in the end we were able to maintain great teamwork and sportsmanship with the opposition”.
During Basketball our Huntingdale team lost most of their games. But the team didn’t lose their spirit. Hannah commented, “Many of the teams had good techniques and it was fair that they won the game. In the end we were able to win three games, we were separated into a girl’s team and a mixed team. It was a very memorable experience”.
Kanga Cricket lost all of their games except one. But a lot of the team reported that it was a good learning opportunity to do better next time. Jessie expressed, “It was honestly kind of disappointing to see our team get thrashed in some of the games, but I’m very proud that none of us had an outburst or gave up and we showed our good reputation for sportsmanship.”
The Huntingdale softball team could have had some improvements. Players, Aditiya and Kynam claimed, “Our team was struggling to stay focused in the games, which ultimately led to our downfall. However, the softball team didn’t seem to mind or lose heart, but we hope that we can do better next time”.
Overall students enjoyed Gala Day. Thank you to all the parents and teachers who helped on the day.
