Japanese

Japanese students in both Years 8 and 10 had lots of fun during our Tokyo Olympics units which ran over Terms 2 and 3.

Year 8 students were put into “countries” last term and participated in many different academic and physical challenges. Their enthusiasm for both was awesome and their team collaboration was outstanding. Students learnt the names of Olympic sports, countries, colours and profiled different athletes from their “country”.  After 8 weeks of fun challenges,  gold, silver and bronze medal prizes were awarded to winning teams.

Year 10 participated in numerous challenges throughout their learning which focused on how to get to various locations around Tokyo using train travel and street directions.  Their learning culminated in a hunt for clues around the school. In the end, the Russian team proved too strong, taking out the Gold medal for the unit.

Kyaraben - Character Lunchbox - Boxed Lunches Resembling Cartoon Characters

Year 8 Japanese students are currently learning about Japanese Cuisine and are embarking on designing and creating KYARABEN, which means character Obento.  The word obento means boxed lunch and is a treasure trove of culinary delights. Typically rice or rice balls are the foundation of a boxed lunch with fried chicken, frankfurts, tomato, broccoli, cheese and other items. A character obento is a boxed lunch where the food items are fashioned to look like popular cartoon characters such as Mickey Mouse or Pokemon characters. If you have students in Year 8, there may be some amazing culinary creations bringing a ray of sunshine to lockdown in your home over the next couple of weeks.  For those who struggle in the kitchen, creating a non-edible model of a character obento will be the option.

Here are some examples from previous years! Happy cooking!
