Australian History Competition 2021

In early June, three Year 9 students and seven Year 7 students took part in the annual Australian History Competition. This was a voluntary experience which had the aim of engaging and challenging students from Years 7 to 10 who have a passion for History.

There were some terrific results. For the Year 7 cohort, Augie Messer achieved a High Distinction, Kitty Hayes achieved a Credit, and Chloe King and Cailin Walker both achieved a Merit. In Year 9, Matilda Messer achieved a Distinction.

A big well done to all students for taking part in this competition! We are proud of you for taking a risk with your learning and representing MFG.

Year 7 participants: Evie Butcher, Kitty Hayes, Chloe King, Augie Messer, Marley Priest, Emmersyn Reid and Cailin Walker.

Year 9 participants: Matilda Messer, Victoria Petrovski and Jasmine Sullivan.

Next year’s competition will run in early June. We encourage all students in Years 7 to 10 2022 to take part!

Humanities: Year 7L Study of Ancient Egypt

Year 7 History in Term 3 has an ancient Egypt focus and the 7L form performed a little mummification on an apple. While not strictly adhering to the ancient rituals and practices (look away now if you’re a little squeamish!) such as pulverising the brain and slurping it out through the nose on the end of a hook, or extracting the body’s main organs (except the heart), the class prepared the body for a period drying and preserving by covering the body in salt.

When we return to on-site learning we will wrap our apples in cloth, secure them in a tomb and bury them somewhere in the school yard for the next five years where we will perform a graduating dig and uncover how the process has worked.

Our little friend is yet to be named as the class are debating a suitable title.
