The show must go on…
Last week we ‘welcomed back’ to MFG, 1975 alumna and Commissioner, Michelle Bissett from the Fair Work Commission.
Given Melbourne’s current lockdown situation, Commissioner Bissett participated in a QnA with our Year 12 Legal Studies and VCAL students via Zoom. Some of the topics covered during the QnA included Commissioner Bissett’s pathway to where she is now (interestingly, she completed a Bachelor of Science at Melbourne University after graduating from Matthew Flinders), why the Fair Work Commission is needed, the role of a commissioner, the best/worst/most interesting aspects of her work, how what she does at the Fair Work Commission is significant to teenage girls and so much more!
Having now hosted a number of QnAs with MFG alumni, it has become quite the tradition to conclude each QnA with the same, final question: “What advice would you give your teenage self?” and this QnA was no different.
Each time, the response to this question is captivating and varied with Commissioner Bissett’s response being:
- Believe in yourself and know that you are capable of great things.
- Appreciate your friends and those who surround you.
- Trust your colleagues, ask questions and learn from them as they have so much to offer.
As much as it’s not ideal having had to run this session virtually, we are so grateful to have had such an interesting and wise alumna give up her time to enlighten our students.
