Belonging
Throughout history the idea of belonging to a ‘tribe’ or a ‘people’ has helped us to protect and define ourselves. Belonging helps us feel valued, needed, and accepted by others, safer, that our beliefs are valid, that our efforts are worthwhile, comforted by being with others who share our interests and values.
Belonging provides the opportunity to share ideas, learn from others, access and provide support and gain the perspective of others to form empathy and understanding. As a result, belonging contributes to positive mental health and wellbeing.
A sense of belonging is important for us all, regardless of age and circumstances. At Kildare we acknowledge the importance of a sense of belonging for our newest members of our community, Year 7 as they navigate through the first exciting, and sometimes challenging weeks of high school. Last week, Year 7 participated in Belonging Day within their House groups. Each of the six sessions focussed on different aspects of the College’s commitment to providing a welcoming environment of inclusion and belonging.
In sessions with myself, students were encouraged through dramatic play, scenarios and other activities to consider:
Why a sense of belonging is so important?
How can we achieve a sense of belonging?
How to navigate through challenges at school that may inhibit ours and others sense of belonging.
Belonging to a group (family, friends, sporting, community, spiritual, cultural, interest, music, online) is not just about what we can get from the group, but just as importantly, what we can give.
To be valued members, we often have to invest our time, care, and effort, join in conversations, cooperate and develop conflict resolution skills.
I was delighted to see the Year 7 students engage in the session. For some the topic appeared quite a challenge as they may identify their own concerns in developing their own sense of belonging. I also appreciated the input and support of the Year 10 Peer Support Leaders who were involved in the sessions, providing strong leadership and contributing to a sense of belonging for our new members of the Kildare community.
