From the Classroom

The Grade 6's have been reading a story during Literacy called 'Who am I?' by Phillip Bunting.  There are many great picture books for older primary students and it is an engaging way to explore ideas, themes and topics. As we immerse our children in authentic texts, we teach them the strategies for reading and how to find the meaning in stories.

In this story, they are exploring the concept of a name just being a name and that the you are also someone that is unique that has the power to be who you want to be.

After exploring this text in the classroom, the Grade 6's used the illustrations in the book as inspiration for creating their own name sculptures in Art.  The end result were these fantastic pieces of work you see below.  In Reading, we talk about making text-to-self connections and thinking about how the books we read relate to our personal experiences. In doing this we gain a deeper understanding of the text and expand our own ideas and thinking. This artwork was a great way to explore making connections to the texts.
