ATSI (Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander) Program at O'Connor

Cultural Centre and Keeping Place Excursion

On Wednesday 17/03 thirty-four of our ATSI students from Years 7 to 10 went on an excursion to Armidale’s Aboriginal Keeping Place.  During our visit we participated in a tour of the art gallery, painted boomerangs in traditional ochre colours and cooked delicious biscuits with lemon myrtle. Some of the art works on display were paintings from local artists and artists from other communities around Australia.

There were also artefacts on display including spears, eel traps, baskets and nulla nulla’s (hunting sticks).

All students were very respectful of the staff and the facilities and made the most of the opportunity to learn about their culture.

SO MANY ACTIVITIES: Our ATSI Students Participated in a variety of activities

ATSI Family Dinner

We would like to invite the families of our ATSI students to a Pizza dinner at O’Connor. We will introduce our ATSI staff and let you know about the PRIDE Program that we will be offering at school this year. Also we would love to hear any ideas that you would be willing to share about how we can best help, support and encourage your children to engage, learn and grow at O’Connor. Please bring the family along for dinner and some handball.

Looking forward to seeing you all,

James Russell
