MULTICULTURAL COMMITTEE NEWS

We held our first meeting for this year on Monday, 1 March, at lunchtime in the Discussion Room with lunch and refreshments provided and over twenty members in attendance.

It was great to be back to welcome the Multicultural Committee members in person. It was also a great pleasure to have former student Melissa Turner, Program Officer from WorkSafe, as our guest speaker, informing us on new exciting projects to cater for Multicultural youth, partnering with our school.

This will be an exciting program with huge a benefit to NGSC  and  VCAL students, in particular, EAL students.

This is a great example of the networking and participation of service providers in the wider community at the school via the Multicultural Committee.

If you wish to keep up to date or get involved with school events such as the Multicultural Festival, the Multicultural Committee provides that opportunity.

This year NGSC did not take part in the Pako Festa parade on 27 February due to COVID restrictions. The festival was done differently this year with the new format going beyond Pakington Street and taking in a total of 13 venues across Geelong, offering a mix of dine-in and takeaway food offerings and a program of entertainment. But if you missed all that, don’t worry you can still catch the “Cultural Arts Trail” and/or Town Hall projections and light show.

“Elements of Culture Arts Trail”

Saturday, 27 FEB to Saturday, 27 March

In partnership with the Pakington Street Traders Association, Pako Festa will also showcase the work of professional and emerging local artists and local schools in the form of an ‘Elements of Culture Arts Trail’ along Pakington Street between Gordon Avenue and Church Street. The works will feature in shop windows from 27 February to 27 March, taking participants on a journey along the street to discover a diverse selection of artwork and local businesses.

Pako Festa Reimagined

Diversitat’s Pako Festa turned on its Geelong West Town Hall projections for the first time in front of 80 ethnic community representatives and Geelong community leaders.

The COVIDSafe projections replace the traditional Pako Festa parade this year, and will run each night from 8:30 pm to 11:30 pm, starting 27 February until 13 March.

The 20 minute audio-visual display, produced by local projection artist Matt Bonner, showcases 30 people from local ethnic communities in the form of iconic portraits taken by local photographer Chrissie Francis.

As each portrait is displayed, event-goers will hear the person in the picture explaining the significance of their national dress and what their culture means to them.

The Geelong community is invited to come down to the Geelong West Town Hall each night to experience the projections, which will run on a continuous loop during the three hours each night.

The Multicultural Committee’s next meeting will be in Term two on Monday, 26 April, at lunchtime, 12:45 pm.
