Science Captains' Report

Last week, Year 12 Biology students completed their practical SAC testing the effect of temperatures on enzyme activity.

The experiment involved seeing how well the enzyme trypsin breaks down casein; a protein found in milk which makes it cloudy, and how changing the temperature affected this.

Year 12 Chemistry students, completed an experiment which tested how reactive different metals were in other metal solutions.

Students used the data collected from the practical to develop an electrochemical series, which lists the metals from the weakest reductant to the strongest reductant (the ability to gain electrons).

Last week, Mr Beale’s Year 12 Physics students were investigating projectile motion. In preparation for their SAC, they completed a small experiment using an apparatus to shoot a metal ball into the air. By measuring the distance the ball flew and the time the ball took to land, students were then able to calculate the velocity, maximum height and kinetic energy of the ball.

Mr Newman’s, Year 10 Science class tested the quality of the water in Lillydale lake. They did multiple different tests to determine the pH, turbidity, hardness and amount of nitrates and phosphates in the water.
