Grade 3/4
We are revising the topic ‘Time’ in Mathematics
We are revising....telling time to the quarter hour and minutes, 24 hour time and using a calendar. We are navigating a calendar and using calendar vocabulary to solve math problems. How do you read a calendar or a clock? What information does a calendar or a clock tell you? The learning about time takes a lot of practice!!!!
Did You Know ?
1. There are 12 calendar months in a year!
2. Each month is made up of approximately four weeks, and are usually 30 days long.
3. Calendars are a device used to measure the year, dividing it into days, weeks and months.
4. Calendars are also used to record events in the natural world such as tides, lunar cycles and seasons.
5. A Calendar helps to keep us organised.
6. Normal years have 365 days but a Leap year has 366.
WOW Facts About Time!
- Einstein's theory of relativity dictates that the closer you are to the centre of the Earth, the slower time goes. Therefore, at the top of Mount Everest, a year would be about 15 microseconds shorter than at sea level.
2. What you think of as a day – how long it takes the Earth to rotate – isn't 24 hours. It's 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4.4 seconds. The reason it's 24 hours from sunrise to sunrise is because every day the Earth moves further in its orbit round the sun – and the change in its position lengthens the day slightly.
3. When the dinosaurs were alive, there were 370 days in a year. The Earth's spin is getting slower. The days are getting longer, by about 1.7 milliseconds per century
4. On Mercury, a day is 2 years long!
