Cranbourne Campus News

Wide eyed and Bushy tailed

The weather was cracking. Mr Sambell and our House Leaders stalked the courtyard like an expectant father. The House flags were out and the teacher's were all ready to launch.

You could almost smell the nervousness of 167 Grade 6's, some still clinging to parents, others  hoping not to be seen with parents (too cool), tiptoeing their way into the campus. Whilst Orientation Day is always a day of energy and enthusiasm this one was particularly special because it's the first full Orientation Day we've been able to hold in three years.

Being that the hall was being used for senior exams, students met in the courtyard before being sent off for 2 hours of special time with the other new students from their House and then the broader House community. This was about offering the new students the time to start to feel like they belong.  Following a recess, students were given tasters to a number of classes in things like physical education, humanities and  drama.

Following the tasters, students got right into their own Amazing Race which was run by the College Student Leaders. Before finishing off with a nice sausage in bread, cordial and icy pole shared with some teachers and parents as they collected a bunch of really exhausted new students. Excitement about the year ahead and all the different opportunities that these students will bring to our community.

Budding Historians in our midst

This year St. Peter College students participated in the National History Challenge which is a research-based competition where students can become historians through various avenues such as researching world history, investigating one's own community, or exploring where one came from. Twelve students from Years 7 to 10 submitted outstanding work that was judged across all submissions in Victoria. Although they were up against stiff competition, they showed creativity and passion to submit the best work they could. Videos, presentations and websites were some of the few projects that were created by these hard-working students. Eight of our students won the “Young Historian Bronze” award for reaching the judging stage and another two students won the “Young Historian Silver” award since they qualified for state judging.

Two of our Year 7’s who created a presentation together were selected as State winners for 2022! Sarah Marie Krasnici and Lovely Grace Trinidad designed a presentation about Women’s History in line with the National History Challenge Theme “Causes and Consequences”. They examined the role of women in history in a well-thought out manner and did ample research. Their work was so outstanding that they have been selected as state winners for the topic 'Australian Women’s History'. Next week they will be receiving the 'Young Historian Gold' award, which includes a medallion and prize money. We wish them luck as they will next be judged at a national level!

A massive congratulations to all involved and especially Sarah Marie and Grace.
