Sustainability News

Ms Belinda Nechwatal, Sienna, Thien An & Henry

Hi everyone!

We have been reflecting on the time we spent at the Big Ideas for Young Minds: Climate Change Summit for Schools summit. Here are some of our thoughts...

Ava

"We did lots of activities that taught us about the environment and how we can help stop Climate Change."

Tom

"The most surprising thing for me was learning about Fracking. Fracking is when companies mine for gas, using harmful chemicals. This can damage the drinking water for the people and animals that depend on the rivers. It's important to try to reduce and eventually stop our use of gas."

Prytha

"What surprised me most was learning about fracking - Fracking happens mainly in the Northern Territory, where mainly lots of Aboriginal people live. They have been getting sick because the chemicals involved in fracking go into their waterways and have infected many people  living in the area. Lots of people are protesting about this issue and the companies are starting to listen.

Being able to attend the Student Climate Change Summit allowed us to listen to inspiring people who are experts in their field. This has ignited sparks to form new ideas which to  take back to Trinity."

Adelia

“I feel hopeful because the more people know about things like Fracking and climate change, the more they can spread awareness.”

Lucy

“We can all try to stop climate change.”

Sienna

"I liked collaborating with other schools and learning about sustainability together."

PLEASE BRING IN YOUR LIDS!

It shocked us to learn that the lids from plastic bottles, shouldn't be put in our recycling bins, and when we leave them on the bottles, it contaminates that recycling load. Lucy and Adelia from 5/6MG are beginning a lid collection project, where they will collect, sort and send your lids to Rethink Recycling Co-op. Rethink saves them from landfill by making them into other products.

Please bring in your bottle lids - e.g. from milk bottles. They should have a 2 or 4 displayed under the lid.

Gardening Fun!

Our garden has exploded with goodness, ready to eat! Today, we picked our first purple carrot! It was tiny, but we cut it into pieces and enjoyed a taste. We also took home lots of silverbeet. Our plants are starting to grow seeds, ready for next year

We would love to see any photos of our produce taken home being included in your dinner!  If you take a photo, please send to bnechwatal@tcs.catholic.edu.au.

Things we need!

Wooden spoons - to make decorative plant labels for our vegetable gardens.

We still need more paper bags to take our veggies home in. Please leave at the office, labelled 'Miss Belinda'. Thank you!

3/4 BOC win Nude Food this week. Well done!

Some yummy ideas - a sandwich/wrap/roll, pasta with vegetables, soup, frittata or sushi, a fruit or vegetable snack, such as whole fruit, cut up veggie sticks, fruit or savoury kebab or a small salad.

There is a great booklet of ideas here
