Can you believe we are already halfway through Term 4? Time flies by when you’re having fun! The students have been very busy the last few weeks completing literacy and numeracy assessments, and showing their teachers how much they have learnt this semester. They are very clever and it has been wonderful to celebrate their achievements.
Uniform and Hats
We are loving the beautiful weather and sunshine! All students are expected to wear the Gilgai Plains Primary School bucket hat, when playing outside. If they don’t have a hat, they will need to play in a shady area. We also encourage your child to have sunscreen in their bag. Also a friendly reminder, that all students must be in full school uniform and wearing black shoes.
Homework
Your child is expected to read a take home book every night and log it in their reading journal. Reading journals are checked by the classroom teacher every Monday. It is also expected that students are completing a Numeracy task each week from the Numeracy homework matrix that was sent home at the beginning of the term. Completion of homework will be reflected in this Semester's Report, so it is important that journals and homework books are returned weekly for your child’s classroom teacher to monitor.
Literacy
In Reading we have continued to learn lots of new phonemes-graphemes, including /air/ as in fairy, /oo/ as in goose, /le/ as in little poodle and /ow/ as in cow. In Writing we have been learning how to write a narrative, making sure to include characters, the setting, a problem and a solution. This week we are moving on to innovating a nursery rhyme. We have loved creating our own version of Humpty Dumpty, Jack and Jill and Little Miss Muffet.
Numeracy
In Maths we have been learning about how to solve subtraction and addition problems using a number line. We have also used our knowledge of ‘10 more and 10 less’, to learn the jump strategy. For example, 32 + 12 = ? We start at 32 on the number line, do one big jump straight to 42 and then 2 more little jumps to land on 44.
Inquiry
We absolutely loved our excursion to Rippon Lea Estate to support us with our learning for our ‘Then and Now’ unit. We learnt about how living conditions have changed over time as well as school, transport, communication, technology and our personal favourite…. toys!
SEL
In SEL we have been learning about how to be self managers and solve problems. We have spoken about different strategies we could use to solve problems that happen out in the playground or in the classroom. It has been wonderful to see the students put these skills into practice.
