Year 9 Business Bootcamp Week

Year 9 Impact Team

During the first week of Term 2, the Year 9 cohort completed their Business Bootcamp component of the Impact Program. This took place in two locations – Monash University in Clayton and Melbourne CBD.

The two days at Monash involved students continuing the hard work of developing their social enterprise business. The day in the CBD focused on social enterprise 'in action’, with inspiring presentations from successful social enterprises Who Gives A Crap and SisterWorks.

Students also traveled to various locations to visit other social enterprises within the city including Etiko, Homie and Beekeeper.

The week was extremely successful, with the Year 9 groups continuing to build momentum as they refine their business ideas and pitches in preparation for their upcoming Showcase Evening on 25 May.

Melbourne Press Club Lunch

Adele Takle, Year 11

On May 2, Elijah Slavinskis (Year 10), Caleb Mendez (Year 10) and I, alongside our teacher Ms Murr, attended the Melbourne Press Club Lunch on behalf of Kilvington.

The Press Club event marked the release of the book Pandemedia: How COVID Changed Journalism, which explores the pandemic’s impact on journalism and how it has reshaped many jobs within the industry.

The Lunch began with an address from Nick Richardson, CEO of the Melbourne Press Club, who also introduced the main panel of the following four journalists: Rachel Baxendale, Patrick Durkin, Gavin Fang and Dr Erin Smith.

While we enjoyed a lunch of crispy-skinned barramundi, the panel members provided insightful and moving accounts of their experiences as journalists throughout the pandemic, as well as the pandemic's broader effect on the field of journalism.

I found it especially interesting to hear from Dr Erin Smith about the severity of the trauma faced by journalists, not only during COVID, but also in the time ‘after’ as the pandemic began to subside.

After a long discussion, we had a delicious New York cheesecake before it was time for questions from the audience. I had the chance to ask about the future effect of Gen Z in the media and journalism. I found it informative to hear the panel members' positive and discerning views on our future in journalism and media, motivating me to consider a career in the field!

I'm very grateful I had the opportunity to attend this highly memorable Melbourne Press Club Lunch and I hope to experience more insights into journalism such as this in the future!

Years 11 and 12 Top Designs excursion

Freddy Telfer, Year 11

On Thursday 11 May, students from the Year 11 and Year 12 Visual Communication and Media classes had the fantastic opportunity of attending the Top Designs 2023 exhibition at the Melbourne Museum.

As part of the VCE Season of Excellence, the exhibition highlighted a selection of exceptional VCE and VET students from 2022, showcasing their work across all design subjects.

The ability to view what past students have created provided us with a great source of inspiration. Further, being immersed in these spaces supplied insight that we wouldn't be able to attain simply through the website.

Overall, it was a wonderfully informative excursion held in perfect weather among the Carlton Gardens. We were full of high spirits, and left feeling encouraged about the creative expedition to come.

Fysh House assembly antics

Jacqui Goldenberg, Dean of Wellbeing-Fysh

During a recent House assembly, Fysh House participated in a high-stakes fashion show, led by our House Captains Amber Bowman and Charlotte Westaway.

Ten 'fashion companies' competed for the honour of the much-coveted 'green carpet' award, using just newspaper and masking tape to make their outfits. The multi-year-level groups displayed some amazing creations, with 'Versace', modelled by Eloise Barton in Year 7, judged as the winner.

It was so nice to see the different year levels interacting with each other and having fun together. House spirit, building community, and enhancing relationships throughout the year levels were all on display throughout the event.
