TERM 4 INQUIRY - Technology / Science

Unit Overview:

Circuit Breaker Themes:Students learn how energy from a variety of sources can be used to generate electricity. They explore how electrical circuits enable this energy to be transferred to another place, and then transformed into another form of energy to suit the needs of particular products. Students contribute to a group or individual design brief. They develop planned steps or modify an existing plan to create a designed solution/product for the purpose of controlling movement, or producing sound or light.

Robotics Themes: Students investigate the hardware, software and coding of Robots.

Essential Questions:

How is electricity produced?

What designed solutions require electricity?

How can electrical energy be transferred to another place?

How can electrical energy control movement, sound or light in a designed product or system?

How can knowledge of computer hardware, software and coding be applied to robotics?

Inquiry Unit

It's Electric: This unit saw the student investigate simple circuits and how electricity is conducted and transferred through different sources. Over the previous Term Four newsletters, I have shared a variety of photos of these sessions.

Coding: During classroom Inquiry sessions, students have used the coding program Code.org to complete a range of teacher set tasks. Students are able to use the iPads to complete these tasks. They range in difficulty but all focus on students problem solving and coding some form of sprite to complete a request.

Robotics: We have three levels of Robotics that the Senior students are investigating, coding and completing tasks with: Bee-Bots, Dash and Dots and EV3.

Bee-Bots: These little yellow robots are a great way to start with Robotics and a little bit of fun. In these sessions students had to code to develop a few simple shapes and move onto more complex designs developed within their partnership.

Dash and Dots: These little blue robots have brought a lot of fun and enjoyment to our Inquiry unit and to a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. These robots can be coded to complete a set of instructions as well as control freehand. We had student 'Dash' races which developed into a class soccer game with the 6 robots. What a HOOT! The students had a ball and it was heart warming to see them all working together.

EV3 Robots: These Robots were the same that four of our students used and coded while attending Robogals at John Monash Science School in Term One. They are a more advanced robot and our students are still in the process of building / adapting / coding and programming these robots. Many students have enjoyed the challenge of understanding how they work. Here a few photos of students researching and experimenting with the EV3 robots.

Maths Olympiad & Special Awards - TERM 4 2020

Congratulations to Will, Eli, Abbey, Eve and Tyler for their outstanding achievement in the Maths Olympiad for 2020. All were presented with medallion and a certificate. We are very proud of your efforts.

Congratulations also goes to all Year Five & Six students who have received Student of the Week awards during the term. We are proud of the respect, responsibility and resilience you are showing towards your learning. Here are a few of the students who we have celebrated during our 5/6 assemblies:

5/6 Friday sport

It's been great to get outside on a Friday to participate in some friendly sports against each 5/6 class. On this day we completed 2 full games of Continuous Cricket. Rounders is coming up this Friday.

Year Six Graduation 2020- CovidSafe Arrangements

Dear Parents and Carers of our Year Six students,

We are writing as a follow-up to our Compass post, dated November 20th 2020, during which we referenced that Year Six Graduation celebrations for 2020 were to be split over 2 nights (Friday 11th and Wednesday 16th December).

As you may appreciate, the ever-changing landscape of CovidSafe Updates from the Victorian Department of Education (DET) has presented school communities with both challenges and opportunities.

The opportunity which has been presented in the updated DET Guidelines is that community members (parents/carers) are now able to attend graduations. This is wonderful news, and we have been busily working over the past five days to determine how we can best accommodate this.

The challenge which has been presented in the updated DET Guidelines is that there are social-distancing restrictions to which we must adhere, and these have caused us to ‘think laterally’ so that we may accommodate.

Therefore, please read the following information carefully:

  • The Year Six Graduation Celebration will now be held over one night within the school gymnasium, on Friday 11th December 2020 (the online celebration for Wednesday 16th December is now cancelled).
  • Each graduating student may invite two guests only (this is inclusive of adults/siblings). Each pairing of guests will be required to sit in allocated, socially-distanced seating.
    • Each visiting adult/sibling will be required to wear a face-mask at all times when indoors.
  • The Upwey South Walk-of-Fame red-carpet arrival will commence from 5:00pm.
  • All attending guests/ graduating students will be required between 5:30pm-6:30pm.
  • The Graduation Ceremony will be split alphabetically over two sessions:
    • A – K (student surnames) 5:30pm- 6:00pm
    • L – Z (student surnames) 6:00pm- 6:30pm
  • At 6:30pm, all attending guests will be asked to allow the graduating students to attend dinner. At this time guests will be required to vacate the grounds.

A catered Graduation meal will be provided for each Year Six student. Please refer to QKR for payment details.Orders need to be completed by Monday 7th of December, 2020 by 4pm.

Following the dinner meal, the Year Six Graduates will attend a disco from 7:00pm-8:30pm in the school gymnasium.

Please refer to the attachment titled “Year Six Graduation Details_11122020” for the finer details of the evening.

We thank you for your understanding and support throughout 2020, and look forward to celebrating with you.

Kind regards,

Llewela Humphries, Gary Monopoli, Judith Liddell, Jessica Cameron

Year Six 2020 Classroom Teachers

BYOiD 2020 - User Agreement

As our senior students have returned to on-site learning, we bring to your attention the expectations of the BYOiD Program.

This is particularly important, as over the period of Remote Learning a number of students installed social messaging apps onto their devices. Many of these apps are not age-appropriate. Therefore, we encourage you to speak with your child about the appropriate use of their device.

Remember the rule: If you wouldn't say the comment in front of your teachers, then don't say it on the screen!
