What's the Matter?

This term, our Inquiry focus is Science based - What's the Matter? Students have been investigating the properties and make-up of different objects and exploring how heat can be applied to these objects. They learnt how heat can be produced in many ways and can move from one object to another. Through scientific inquiry, they experimented with common materials and objects to create changes of state between solids, liquids and gases by adding or removing heat.

Students have conducted and observed how heat impacts various materials.  They compared how food dye reacts to water of varying temperatures and they created magic hot hands that caused the piece of paper to spin on the end of the stick! The most recent science experiment involved ice cubes, sugar, salt, aluminium foil, cling wrap and a whole lot of fun!

The Questions:

  • How will you try to keep your ice cube frozen for the longest period of time?
  • What will you use to try to melt your ice cube in the quickest period of time?

As scientists, the students discussed with their partner what they were going to use to try to get one ice cube to melt quickly and how they were going to try to stop the other ice cube from melting.  Prior to conducting the experiment, students listed the equipment they needed, made predictions and wrote out the method.

 Let's see what happens....

Amazing artwork by Sonia!

We have been lucky enough to have the talented Sonia Abbas (pre-service teacher) brighten up some areas of the school. Please enjoy the pictures below of the most recent artwork. We would like to thank Sonia for her dedication in teaching 3/4A throughout her three week placement and for really brightening up some areas of the school.

Creativity in English

As part of our Reading program this term, we have been studying the text 'Matilda' by Roald Dahl. Students have been choosing activities from a grid that allows for a range of learning styles. Creating Miss Trunchbull's office and designing wanted posters were two popular choices!

STUDENT OF THE WEEK AWARDS

Congratulations to the students that were awarded 'Student of the week'

awards over the last two weeks at our level assemblies.

Outside Learning

Sometimes we take the classroom outside. A recent wellbeing activity involved the students spending some time out in the playground and relaxing in the fresh air. They were able to look around them and then sketch what they could see. Here are some pictures of students adding some finishing touches to their amazing sketches back in the classroom.
