From the Senior School Sportsmaster

Firstly, my thanks to those of you who attended Oxford Falls on Saturday for our opening weekend of the Summer Season.  Your cooperation and understanding with regards to our COVID-19 set up is appreciated.  We are trying to create 'playing bubbles' at Oxford Falls with the two indoor basketball venues and the two cricket ovals as four separate 'bubbles'.  We do this to minimise COVID-19 risk to both players and spectators.  Could I therefore ask that parents and players respect the 'bubbles' we are trying to create and make sure that once you enter a 'bubble' you remain for the entire duration of the respective game you are watching.  This is particularly important in relation to basketball as an indoor sport.  We are endeavouring to run a 'Closed Door Policy' during game times.

I attach the Venue Map for your information.

The ISA Summer Season kicks off on Saturday with a full set of basketball and cricket fixtures added to the 'already started' NSTA Tennis, MWJCA Cricket and the NSW Pennant Squash.

We continue the Summer sports under revised COVID-19 restrictions.  I once again draw your attention to the protocols pertaining to Attendance at Oxford Falls.

A full copy of the St Pius COVID-19 protocols for sport can be found below. Please familiarise yourselves with this document.  Please be aware that we have no control over AWAY game venues with regards to their protocols and will publish these as and when they become available.  Please check the College App before departure to games for any updates we have received.

In addition to the COVID-19 protocols, I also attach the latest SPX Risk Warning document for your consideration.

NSTA Tennis

Firstly, thank you to Mr Garvey and Mrs Keighery who ran the tennis so efficiently last Saturday. We had 12 Pius Teams playing in the 8.00 am time slot, with 5 of the 7 matches being Pius vs Pius. It was an exciting doubles match between Team 11 - Martin Chan and Aidan Dominguez and Team 12 - Alex Vaccher and Alex Dal Molin, with Team 11 just edging forward with a final score of 6 - 5. Riley Seeto, Team 16 also played a great game against Ethan Li, Team 15, with Ethan just edging in front for the win in the end.

The 10.00 am session was a quiet one last week with only 4 matches being played. Well done to Pius 7, 8 and 3 who all walked away with a win.

Please ensure that you are checking your weekly scores, rankings and draw on the xpoint site: https://www.xpointsports.com/region/325/currentEvents

Pink Day @ Oxford Falls – 1st XI Report

The annual SPX Cricket Pink Day @ Oxford Falls on Saturday was different this year with COVID-19 restrictions limiting the activities. We thank Oakhill, our opponents in the 1st and 2nd XI in two T20 games, with the games acting as a final trial before the start of the ISA competition.

The 1st XI bowled first in T20 #1 and restricted their opponents quite effectively until a late flurry of runs. A total of 104 was very “gettable” but despite handy contributions from Josh Overton, Riley Kennedy and Tom Wunsch the run rate grew too quickly and the 1st XI fell 11 runs short.

Batting first in T20 #2, SPX’s batsmen played with some more intent. Tom Wunsch (49) and Logan Nicey (30) combined for a very good partnership which led to a final total of 109. A solid all-round bowling effort led by Liam Chang and James Power were well supported by Nick Ward, Liam Kinna, Harrison O’Brien and Logan Nicey resulted in a 20-run win!

The 2nd XI won both their T20s (see match report).

Thanks to the SPX Cricket Club for donating $500 to the McGrath Foundation.

Sydney Junior Pennant Week 1

The 2020/21 Summer season for squash started in earnest last Saturday. One match was played at Knox Grammar where SPX Team 2 won, with Luke Massa representing the team twice!

The rest of the fixture was played at our home ground, Willoughby Squash Club, where in some cases, it was St Pius X vs St Pius X. Overall it was a successful day where some boys had to play in all five matches in their best of five.

Hopefully the fitness of all players will improve as the season progresses.
