Chess success!!

National Chess Championship

On the 30 November and 1 December, eight students from Koonung played in the Interschool Online Chess Finals, and finished with an excellent result of equal 3rd in the country.

29 schools from six states as well as New Zealand competed in the two day event. Across the whole tournament 608 students, from prep to Year 12, competed. Everyone played a total of seven games, and earned points by winning and drawing. The team score is calculated by the sum of a school’s top four players. Our students all did extremely well, with everyone scoring at least two points, and some scoring as high as five.

Our team’s top scorers were James Lonnen (5/7), Henry Jackson (5/7), Tehmi Harding (5/7), and myself. Our other team members were Dhruv Mehta (4/7), Alex Lee (3/7), Dylan Llewellyn, (3/7), and Rory Spicer (2/7). Scoring any points at such a high level of competition is an excellent achievement for all involved. Special congratulations should also go to Tehmi Harding, who won the top girl award.

Koonung is looking to continue with chess next year, most likely on Friday lunchtimes,  and we are always happy to see new faces.
