From the Deputy Principal/Head of Senior School

Br Richard (Silverius) Lenehan, FMS

1925-2019

Late last term I had the privilege of taking three students from Year 11 to represent St Gregory’s College at the Requiem Mass for Br Richard (Silverius) Lenehan, who passed away on 30 March aged 93. The funeral was held in the Chapel at St Joseph’s College Hunters Hill. Br Richard had been living in the Marist Brothers community at Hunters Hill for the last eleven years, having spent the previous 63 years working in a range of schools, mostly in different parts of NSW.

Br Richard was a teacher at St Gregory’s College Campbelltown from 1977 – 1984. In those eight years, he also coached the First XIII. He was assisted by Peter Mulholland, who took over from Brother Richard as head coach after he left St Greg’s to move to St Patrick’s Marist College, Dundas. Known today as the GIO Cup, the competition has also been known as the Amco Shield and Commonwealth Bank Cup. St Gregory's Campbelltown still hold the record for national schoolboy Rugby League championships with nine title victories. During Br Richard’s time at St Greg’s, the College became the first school to win back-to-back titles in 1979 and 1980 and he was rewarded with another victory in his final year at the College in 1984. Under Peter Mulholland, St Greg’s became the first school to win three titles in a row from 1989-1991 and he also was coach of title winning sides in 1986 and 1993. Between the two men, they coached teams that won eight of the nine titles.

A strong representation of St Greg’s old boys were in attendance at the funeral for Br Richard and they spoke very highly of their fond memories of a great teacher, mentor and coach. They talked about his strong sense of presence, high standards and expectations and his unfailing commitment to his religious vocation and St Gregory’s College. They were thrilled to see the current students who had represented the College at the funeral and they thoroughly enjoyed catching up St Greg’s stalwart, Br Luke who also made the trip across to Hunter Hill to celebrate the life of a great Marist Brother, Br Richard Lenehan. May he rest in peace.

GIO Cup v Holy Cross Ryde

The first game of the 2019 season of the GIO Cup for St Greg’s will take place on Tuesday 21 May against Holy Cross College Ryde, with the game commencing at 6.30pm. It will be played at Olsen Oval, in the grounds of Holy Cross College. Interestingly, the two Colleges have a strong history of competition in the schoolboy rugby league championships. The two teams met in both the 1979 and 1989 grand finals with St Gregory’s College emerging victorious on both occasions by a margin of just two points. Forty years ago, the final score line was 16-14 and thirty years ago it was 12-10.

Further details about the game and the travel arrangements for spectators will be sent home in a note from the Sport Coordinator, Mr Cook. However, Holy Cross has asked us to inform all families through our newsletter of the following arrangements for the game.

  • Parking will be available onsite for staff and supporters from St Greg’s. Please note however that no P-plate drivers are allowed on our site at any time.
  • Entry to the College will be via Frank Street (the Victoria Road driveway will be closed to prevent traffic congestion on the main road).
  • Street parking surrounding the College will also be available.
  • There will be a BBQ and drinks stall available provided by the Holy Cross Old Boys’ Association.

All spectators from St Greg’s, unless travelling with their parents to the game, will be required to take the buses departing from the school. We wish our team and their coaches all the very best for the game.

Winter uniform

I wish to commend the overwhelming majority of students who have returned to second term displaying an excellent standard in the wearing of the winter uniform. It is important that these high standards are maintained at all times, including travelling to and from school and also at sport. I thank parents for their support in the regard.

Best wishes,

Mr Paul Brooks
