Term Two 2019

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Term Two! We are looking forward to another busy and exciting Term in Year Six.

Sport

Well done to all of our Summer Interschool Sports teams who competed admirably throughout the competition.

The Winter Interschool Sports Competition will commence on Friday 10th of May. All students have been placed in a sport of their preference out of Netball, AFL, Soccer, T-Ball, Hockey, Handball and Mixed Sports. On Monday 20th May the House Cross Country competition will be run at school from 9am until 11am. Qualifying students will then go on to compete at the District Cross Country. Students and parents will be notified if they qualified.

Year Six Camp - Canberra

All the Year Six students deserve a huge congratulations for their wonderful efforts on camp last term. The students represented Black Rock Primary superbly, asking an array of fantastic questions, listening intently, and excitedly participating in all activities. A highlight for the kids was definitely the hands-on excitement of Questacon. I think we can all agree it was a jam-packed camp and well worth the drive.

Curriculum

Academically, our education focus is on Literacy and Mathematics. We are guided by the Victorian Curriculum in delivering curriculum requirements. Multiplication and division, fractions and decimals and statistics and probability will be the main areas covered in Maths during Term Two. Whilst in Literacy, students will continue to look at a specific Word Study focus each week. They will use VCOP writing techniques and focus on persuasive writing and debating, as well as continuing our Literature Circles group work.

Inquiry

This term, students will be studying Science and completing the topic, ‘Circuits and Switches.’ During this unit, they will be given opportunities to investigate how electrical energy can be transformed and transferred in circuits. They will be provided with hands-on, shared experiences of constructing simple circuits. The students will design and appraise a model that uses a circuit to transform energy from one form to another.

Homework

In Term Two, students will complete a 'Scientists and Inventors' home investigation. It is expected that students will be working towards completing this throughout the term. They will also be assigned their usual weekly tasks including Big Writes, Spelling, Maths and Speaking and Listening. These tasks are handed out every Monday and due in each Friday. The students can access their homework on google classroom each week or they can request a hard copy.
