Message from the College Acting Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

First of all we would like to say a very big thank you to all the members of our community who attended our Family Fun Night last week. We had an amazing turn out and it was wonderful to see so many of our students, parents and staff participating in the round robin games. Our free sausage sizzle was extremely popular with over 2000 sausages cooked and enjoyed by all. The North Melbourne Football club supported the event, offering fun activities for our community to enjoy and Big Childcare entertained and engaged everyone with some fantastic games! We would like to sincerely thank Big Childcare for their ongoing support of this event, which also included donating the sausages for our sausage sizzle.

Earlier this term we held our School Council nominations. I would like to extend our congratulations to Anne-Marie Parkinson, Kristy Mathieson and Robert Wall on their successful reappointment to our College School Council. I would also like to welcome Kate Lachmund who will be joining our School Council as a staff representative. On behalf of our College community, I would like to thank Chris Daxecker who has been a valued part of our School Council for the past two years. We look forward to meeting with our 2019 School Council at our Annual General Meeting in a few weeks.

Throughout the year, the College conducts emergency evacuation drills to ensure that in event of an emergency, students and staff understand and implement the agreed processes to ensure everyone’s safety. Last week we practiced a whole school evacuation to the oval located near Tarneit Central Kindergarten. We were very impressed with the maturity and cooperation students demonstrated during this practice drill. Our next emergency drill will practice all Prep – Year 6 students evacuating to the Gym and all Year 7 – 9 students to Building C.

On Tuesday 21 March our College will be celebrating Harmony Day, recognising the valuable contributions of our multicultural community. We will be celebrating this event by wearing a touch of orange and investigating what it means to be inclusive. Harmony Day celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity and it is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. This year marks the 20th anniversary for the celebration of Harmony Day, and 21 March is also the United Nations International Day for the elimination of Racial Discrimination. More information will be sent home next week.

Last week we introduced our College Student Captains to our community. Simran Bhutter, Deniz Oztan, Bikram Saini and Joy Patel introduced themselves at our Year 5 – 9 Assembly and shared what they like about our College. It was wonderful to hear each student comment on the relationships they have built at Tarneit P-9 College and a number of them referenced the diversity and multicultural representation at our College. We were all incredibly proud of them and are looking forward to working with them throughout the year.

Kind Regards
