Sports Excellence Program

Mr Jamie Tarrant (Girton Grammar Head of Athletic Development and consultant Exercise Physiologist), in conjunction with some LaTrobe University Exercise Physiology students has now finished completing the first round of Functional Movement Screen testing on all second and third year SEP students. Some have completed their Y-Balance test while others will complete this in our SEP sessions. A full report will be sent to students and parents in the coming weeks. The results are generally very impressive, and reinforce the work that all students have done throughout their involvement in the program so far has improved movement patterns. Some students achieved a combined score over 14, no asymmetry and no 0 or 1 results, meaning that we are able to safely increase the load that these students are placed under. Some students have not quite reached this level yet, and we have corrective exercises for them to complete to develop in the areas identified as needing to improve before we can safely increase the complexity of their exercises.

The Foundation 1 (beginners) students have spent the first few weeks learning the very first movements that are developed into the program. These exercises, although simple in nature, form the building blocks to which we can add to in the many years to come. By mastering these exercises early on we are able to progress student development and a much greater rate. Students are happily learning and exploring how their body’s move and are enjoying the challenge of participating with their friends. Students have been given a number of equipment pieces (foam roller and yoga mat) and will be required to bring these to each session they attend. Next week’s program will focus on agility and flexibility.

The Developmental One (second year) students have thoroughly enjoyed using the new sandbells and continually show improvement from session to session. For some of these students, this is the first time they have added load to a movement pattern and have found the added challenge a real test. Exercises such as single leg squats and nordic lowers are still providing adequate challenges to students wanting a test but can also be regressed to those still learning the movement.

The Developmental Four (third year) group are now completing ACL pre-hab exercises such as depth drops and sharper changes of direction with more force moving through the lower limbs. Strength exercises they completed this week were TRX chest presses and hanging scap raises, which works the scapula (shoulder blade) area. Before the addition of our new strength and conditioning equipment we were unable to target this area and movement patterns associated with it. They also completed Nordic Lowers, finding them very difficult after not completing them for some time.
