Debating News

Year 10 student Matilda Messer was recently presented with a prestigious award in our Year 9/10 category of the Debating Association of Victoria. Matilda was presented with the Swannie Awards as the best speaker in the Geelong region. The award was presented at the Methodist Ladies College in Melbourne on the  7th of October and was watched by winners from other debating regions and divisions and their families. There were five winners from across the state for Matilda’s division (pictured below). During the season a very experienced adjudicator said she had awarded Matilda the highest score she had ever given a student in that division. A wonderful performance. 

This was an incredible achievement for Matilda who was awarded best speaker of the debate three times during the 2022 season, including in the Octo Finals against Scotch College. 

Together with the entire team of Matilda, Sonnet Pandit, Thoorigai Murugan, and Gemma Ellis, our team was the most successful for MFG in many years. Throughout the season it was a supportive and dedicated group of students who demonstrated MFG traits consistently and excelled each time they met. Our school community should be very proud of these girls!
