Identity and Mission

Anthony Chapman

It has been a busy past few weeks in the area of Mission and Identity.

The Year 10 students participated in their annual Community Service program in the Huon Valley. They participated in activities at primary schools, aged-care facilities and with Edmund Rice Camps, with a group also undertaking a rubbish clean-up at various parts of the Valley. The students explored issues of community building, marginalisation and connecting the story of Jesus to what they were undertaking. They finished off the experience with a reflection day on kunanyi/Mount Wellington.

The Year 7 students participated in their Community Service Day at Clifton Beach, which included an introduction to service, a beach clean-up and some games and activities. The beach is now spotless and there are plans afoot for more activities in Term 4.

The Warrane Breakfast program has begun again this term, and a group of Year 10 students are heading over there on Thursday mornings to help out and provide positive role-modelling to the students there. Well done to these girls who are starting their days early each week.

The Mission Sisters continue to support Vinnies with a lunchtime cook-up every fortnight. There have been plenty of goodies supplied to Loui's Van to support those on the streets who are hungry and lonely, and, with the Year 9/10 Service Learning class also cooking each week, Vinnies has been well supported by the students of Mount Carmel.

Mission Week happened last week at school, with the highlight being the Disadvantage Day. Some classes learnt what it was like to go without, to simulate what happens to the majority of people in our world who live in disadvantaged circumstances. It is a learning that hopefully will build empathy for those who go without.

Finally, the Youth Alpha group continues to meet once a week. This is a group of students exploring more deeply issues of spirituality, and they have been capably led by Fr Shammi and Sam Clear from the Archdiocese Youth Ministry.

Lots more to come in Term 4, so watch this space!
