Wellbeing

Seb, Josh and Raffy

This term, teachers will be engaging in a series of professional development sessions focussed on individual learning needs. Alongside this learning, students will be exploring inclusion and the role individual differences play within a learning community. We invite you to learn along side us, as we continue to be committed to inclusion and diversity at BBPS.

All people are different. And each child grows in their own way ... BEV FINISH THIS.

What are disabilities and developmental challenges?

Childhood disabilities and developmental challenges include mobility challenges (such as difficulty or inability to walk), thinking skills and/or behaviour challenges (e.g. intellectual disability, attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder), and sensory difficulties (e.g. vision/hearing loss). Many disabilities will be identified by the time a child attends primary school. This might include more noticeable disabilities such as cerebral palsy, blind and low vision, deaf and hard of hearing, physical disability or communication and language disorders. Others may be more difficult to identify before school, or the symptoms might not be obvious until a child is within the school environment. Some of the common developmental challenges or disabilities that may not be recognised until a child is in primary school include:

  • Autism
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder
  • Oppositional defiant disorder
  • Anxiety
  • Intellectual disability
  • Specific learning disabilities (reading, mathematics, writing)

Each week we will be sharing information about these different learning challenges and disabilities, providing links to supports and further information, and suggested strategies for how you can support your child to understand and appreciate individual differences within their learning community.

A big thank you to students from grade 1 who have been helping to keep our school grounds looking lovely by sweeping up the fallen leaves in the playground.

We are super proud of Jude, who completed the 3km run in the Melbourne Marathon along with members of his family.  Jude: "It was a lot of fun. There were 3000 people. My Dad, brother, sister and Pa were there. I felt a bit scared when I walked into the MCG at the end of the race."
