Performing Arts  Matters

Congratulations to our Senior Jazz Band and Mr Power who performed at the Manly Jazz Festival on the first Saturday of the holidays. There was a full and appreciative crowd at our timeslot. Honourable mention to Mr Couani and Mr Brannan who also attended the performance.

Congratulations also to Tom Livy, Year 12 Music 1. Tom was nominated for his guitar performance by the NESA Music markers for possible inclusion into the ENCORE performance showcasing the finest HSC music students in NSW. We wait nervously for the outcome but take this opportunity to acknowledge Tom’s amazing effort.

A reminder that as Term 4 begins attendance at Ensemble rehearsals and lessons is mandatory. Please email your tutor or ensemble director with any difficulties. There has been some movement in ensembles, especially the Jazz Bands. Please check with your director if you are confused. On your original ensemble agreement it states plainly that if you have lessons at the school (excluding piano) membership of an ensemble is mandatory. Please see me if there is any confusion with this.

Good luck to Ms Lindley and the cast of our 2023 musical production The 39 Steps. They begin rehearsals this Friday. Break a leg.

Drama Matters

Year 9 Drama Performances

At the end of last term Year 9 performed two scenes from Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. This was a culmination of their work from Term 3 which included a workshop with the actor Chris Tomkinson and classes exploring how to confidently speak the poetry and rhythms of Shakespeare’s language. We also looked at many activities used at The Globe Theatre as well as what it would be like to perform in that space. Always asking ourselves, what might it be like to be part of Shakespeare’s acting troupe and who was the audience watching his plays?

Year 9 students played the working men from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” known as the mechanicals. Here is a picture of the actors in character. They will perform these again for the Drama night towards the end of term.

Drama Ensembles

There will be no Drama Ensembles this week. The Intermediate Ensemble will start again next Thursday 20 October. The Senior Drama Ensemble, usually held on Monday, will now become rehearsal time for The 39 Steps.

The 39 Steps

Our rehearsal times are Monday & Friday 3.30-5.30 plus every alternative Sunday. Please see the rehearsal schedule attached. This Friday we will be joined by professional actor and teacher Sam Haft who was in the original Australian production of The 39 Steps. His workshop will be invaluable to each actor and we are excited to have his input.
