Tickle my droid incursion
Our year 8 Enhancement students participated in an incursion by the Victorian Space Science Education Centre where they worked collaboratively and applied their mathematical knowledge to problem-solve in designing and coding a path for robots around obstacles. This activity mimicked the work achieved daily by engineers who program robots for data-collecting missions on the surface of the planet Mars!π©πΌβπ

Mission to Mars excursion π
The students were also fortunate to attend onsite at the Victorian Space Science Education Centre for an excursion in the first week of term 4. They worked as a team and used their problem-solving skills to successfully complete a survey of the Mars surface.Β
Β
Each of the students had a turn working as both an astronaut, mission controller and research scientist. The mission controllers took their role very seriously as they had to communicate via radio with the astronauts on the simulated Mars surface and were responsible for their safety and the success of the mission.Β
Β
They did a wonderful job saving the astronauts from a dust storm and also a solar flare! Our astronauts also did a marvelous job collecting their equipment, de-pressurising in the airlock and stepping out onto the Martian surface to collect real soil and rock samples, drilling an ice core, conducting a thermal survey and measuring seismic activity.
Β
In the afternoon the students worked collaboratively to analyse their samples and undertake further investigations in the laboratory.

It was wonderful to see our students demonstrating the Sunbury College values while challenging themselves and having fun in this unique learning experience. Well done to all! ππΌ
