Principal's Update

Welcome to 2019

Welcome back and welcome to the new members of the Mornington Secondary College community. It has been a very smooth start to the year and I would like to publicly thank all members of my staff for their commitment in ensuring classes are prepared, students are engaged and any issues were dealt with quickly.

It is only week 4 and already many activities have taken place. Our Year 7 and 8 students had their very own swimming trials, leading up to a very successful swimming carnival at the Pines pool. School photos have been taken and will be available shortly. Camps have begun with the Sea to Summit students exploring Phillip Island for 3 days and BHP have walked Point Nepean.

Year 7 students participated in the annual Transition day, where there were many opportunities for students to meet other students in a very structured but fun way. This was followed by the Year 7 Meet n Greet afternoon; an opportunity for parents to meet teachers. It is extremely important for positive relationships to develop between the school and families. Unfortunately I was unable to make the afternoon due to an unexpected funeral. I do hope to meet many of our families throughout the year.

Thankyou to Denise Leggett – Assistant Principal and her team for organising this event.

There are still many things to look forward to during Term 1. Sign ups and auditions will take place for our annual school production. This year our students will bring the classic ‘Footloose’ to the stage. Information and dates will be announced during homegroup.

House Athletics day is scheduled for 19th March. Assemblies will be held in the next couple of weeks for all students to sign up for athletic events.

Open night will be held Tuesday 26th February, 5-7pm. Tours will run from 5pm. Please let your friends and families know.

All teachers will be completing progress checks for all students. These reports will be a point of discussion at the Parent/Teacher interviews, scheduled for 6th March beginning at 12pm. Please make bookings through Compass.

During Term 1 all Year 9 students will be offered the Morrisby online career diagnostic assessment. The test will be conducted by the Career Education Association of Victoria. Following the assessment, both student and parent have the opportunity to participate in a one on one career counselling session. This is part of the Victorian Government initiative to further provide support to all students. I encourage all students to participate as the information gained will be extremely valuable.

School Council is the governing body of a school and play a very important role in all matters of policy. Each year elections take place for approximately half of the council positions. This year there are 2 parent vacancies, 2 student vacancies and 2 staff vacancies. School Council elections will take place and nominations close 4pm Tuesday 26th February. If you require further information please contact Geraldine Carter (59700200).

I look forward to working with you in 2019.
